Bean, Cougars help Bazzle stay perfect versus Saint

Nick Bazzle has never lost to St. Stephens High School on the football field. His team kept that record perfect on Friday.

The Cougars got off to a great start and cruised to a 41-0 victory over the Indians in both team's Northwestern 3A/4A opener.

The win was Bazzle's 14th against the Indians with the previous 13 coming as the head football coach of Newton-Conover.

CVAC ROUND-UP: Bears suffer first loss against Cavs

Despite leading 21-16 at halftime, Bunker Hill gave up 20 second half points on its way to a disappointing 36-29 Homecoming loss to East Burke in Claremont on Friday.

Larry Clark led the Cavaliers (3-2, 1-0) with 187 rushing yards and a touchdown. Fellow running back Robbie McGee added 91 yards on the ground.

The Cavaliers rushed for 302 yards in the contest.

NWC 3A/4A ROUND-UP: FG lifts Pioneers past Tigers

A 39-yard field goal by Alex Parsons as time expired gave Watauga a stunning 28-27 victory against Fred T. Foard during the Tigers' Homecoming game on Friday.

Training 18-0 early in the contest, the Tigers (2-3, 0-1) rallied behind Sam Benfield and Jacob Schmidt in the second half to nearly pull the comeback win.

Red Devils beat Maiden, move to 2-0 in CVAC

Continuing its dominant play early in the conference schedule, the Newton-Conover boys soccer team rolled to another win on Thursday.

The Red Devils (4-2-1, 2-0-0) scored three goals in the first half and six more in the second half on their way to a 9-1 road victory over Maiden.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Trojans' 8 goals blank Wildcats

September 13, 2012

The Bandys soccer team scored four goals in the first and second half each on their way to a 8-0 shutout victory over Draughn on Thursday.

Zach Beresford led the Trojans (3-4, 2-0) with three goals and two assists.

Armando Rivera, Kenny Ryan, Kyle Enyeart, Ben Howden and Morrissey Muniz added goals in the victory.

Stephen Simmons, Howden and Rivera also tallied assists in the victory.

Lady Bucs beat Spartanburg Methodist in three sets

The CVCC volleyball team improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play with a three-set victory over the visiting Spartanburg Lady Pioneers on Thursday 25-22, 25-22 and 25-15.

Stat leaders for the Lady Bucs include Jennifer Beatty with 10 kills and five aces, Hannah Lewis with 18 digs, Lacy Goodson with 24 assists and Cecilia Brandon with 3.5 blocks.

St. Stephens slides by South Iredell, moves to 12-1

At the top of its respective conferences, South Iredell and St. Stephens met in a match up of prep volleyball’s best in Hickory on Wednesday.

Battling back and forth almost the entire match, the Lady Indians fought off the Lady Vikings to pick up the non-conference victory in four sets 25-23,18-25, 25-17 and 25-22.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Tigers top Cougars in soccer

Bouncing back from its first loss of the season, the Fred T. Foard soccer team picked up a 4-0 conference victory against Alexander Central.

The shutout by the Tigers (10-1, 1-1) was their eighth in 11 games this season and fifth on the road.

Scoring goals for Foard were Scottie Whitman, Kenan Ruffner, Ryan Stasiak and Daniel Tomberlin.
