N.C. State picked as ACC favorite at media day

For the first time in nearly four decades, North Carolina State enters the season as the Atlantic Coast Conference favorite.

The Wolfpack, with four starters back from a team that reached the NCAA round of 16, earned 26 of 53 first-place votes Wednesday from media members at the league's annual "Operation Basketball" media day.

Maiden, Newton-Conover advance to CVAC title game

The finals of the Catawba Valley 2A volleyball championship will feature two sets of Devils.

Maiden and Newton-Conover both picked up semifinal wins on Tuesday to advance to the Wednesday's title game at Maiden High School.

Greyson Frey's goal off of a Jake Lafrancis pass with five minutes to go helped the Newton-Conover soccer team pick up a 4-3 victory against Bandys in Catawba on Tuesday.

The win keeps Newton-Conover (11-4-1, 9-2-0) in second place in the CVAC standings, trailing only South Iredell by two games.

The Red Devils play at the Vikings on Thursday night.

TENNIS PLAYOFFS: Maiden advances, Bandys ousted

The first round of the 2A dual team girls tennis playoffs started on Tuesday with two Catawba County schools in action.

Maiden (17-1) avenged its only loss of the season by knocking off North Lincoln, 6-2. The Lady Blue Devils advance to face Salisbury (17-2) in the second round.

Bandys was shut out by Brevard, 9-0. The Lady Trojan's season ends at 13-4 overall.

Boyles repeats, Young wins girls title at CVAC meet

For the second time in as many weeks, cross-country athletes invaded Southside Park in Newton on Monday.

After last week's United Way Invitational, 147 athletes, including 92 boys and 55 girls, participated in the Catawba Valley 2A championships.

The Fred T. Foard soccer team picked up a close 1-0 shutout victory over Hibriten on Monday.

Logan Winstead scored the lone goal for the Tigers (14-5-1, 5-4-1).

Foard travels to rival St. Stephens (11-5-2, 6-1-2) on Wednesday in a crucial Northwestern 3A/4A contest.

Funk wins 10th Anniversary Greater Hickory Classic

Fred Funk went from trepidation to jubilation in one year at the Greater Hickory Classic.

Funk held off a charging Duffy Waldorf and birdied his 18th hole of golf on Sunday to claim the 10th Anniversary GHC title at Rock Barn Golf & Spa.

The win comes one year after injuring his left thumb in last year's Greater Hickory Classic in Conover.

Fred Funk took a one-stroke lead over Larry Mize in the Greater Hickory Classic on Saturday, shooting his second straight bogey-free 6-under 66.

"I really jump-started my round with a save on No. 2," Funk said. "I drove it into the bunker and had to wedge it out for par. Then I made a 30-footer (putt) on the next hole (for birdie), and that got me going."

Jackson, Appalachian State outlast Samford 28-25

Jamal Jackson threw two touchdowns and running back Steven Miller racked up 186 all-purpose yards Saturday in Appalachian State's 28-25 win over Samford in Southern Conference action.

Appalachian State (5-2, 3-1) built a 21-10 halftime lead behind Jackson's first touchdown pass of the day, a 48-yarder to Miller.

Bears tally 640 total yards, run by Tusculum

The Lenoir-Rhyne football team rolled up a season-high 640 yards of total offense, including 569 on the ground, in a 51-6 Homecoming victory over Tusculum on Saturday afternoon.

Three players rushed for over 100 yards for the Bears (4-2, 2-1), including sophomore halfback Jarrod Spears with a game-high 145 yards as L-R won its third-straight contest.
