The chilly autumn weather late in November, the sound of the band playing and cheerleaders sounding off to inspire the crowd to stand up and cheer.

The playoffs bring about a special feeling to those who attend high school football games all across the state.

Sevilla, Red Tornadoes blank Red Raiders, 9-0

The Hickory soccer team made an emphatic statement to start the 3A playoffs on Wednesday.

Carlos Sevilla netted four goals, helping the Red Tornadoes pick up their 23rd win of the season in shutout fashion, 9-0, against South Point.

Fred T. Foard's Jake Pierce commits to East Carolina

Fred T. Foard swimmer Jake Pierce has committed to East Carolina University.

Pierce chose ECU over Boston College and N.C. State.

He said the decision to go with the Pirates was simple.

SOCCER PLAYOFFS: Pair of teams win by one goal

Fred T. Foard advanced to the second round of the 3A soccer playoffs with a 2-1 double overtime victory against East Henderson on Wednesday.

Wyatt Shely scored the winning goal for Foard (16-7-1).

Kenan Ruffner also netted a goal and made an assist for the Tigers, while Logan Winstead assisted on Ruffner's goal.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Golden Lions eliminate Trojans

The Bandys soccer team fell 3-0 on the road to Shelby in the first round of the 2A soccer playoffs on Tuesday.

The Trojans finish their season with a 6-14 overall record.

The Golden Lions (17-4-1) face the winner of the South Iredell/West Lincoln game on Wednesday.

Hornets avenge loss, advance to title game

October 30, 2012

Overcoming a 8-0 halftime deficit, the Catawba County Hornets advanced to the Central Carolinas Football League championship game.

Hornets linebacker Alvin Gibson recovered a fourth quarter fumble in the end zone, helping his team knock off Richmond County on Saturday, 12-8.

The victory for Catawba County (13-1) avenges an earlier defeat to the Golden Bears this season.

NCHSAA releases soccer brackets, 6 teams qualify

The North Carolina High School Association (NCHSAA) released its boys prep soccer playoff brackets on Monday.

Below are the six match ups featuring Catawba County schools, which will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 31:

2A playoffs
Bandys (6-13) at Shelby (16-4-1)
Bunker Hill (10-8-1) at Brevard (10-4-1)
Newton-Conover (12-6-1) at Owen (19-1)

3A playoffs

PREP NOTEBOOK: Foard wins regional XC title

The Fred T. Foard girls cross-country team captured a 3A West Regional title during Saturday's meet at Freedom Park in Morganton.
