Tuesday marked second round playoff games in 2A and 3A volleyball.

Three Catawba County schools — Maiden, Newton-Conover and St. Stephens — were in action.

Heat beat Bobcats 98-92 in preseason game

RALEIGH — With Dwyane Wade out, Chris Bosh turned in the aggressive performance Miami coach Erik Spoelstra wanted to see.

Bosh scored 21 points to help the Heat beat the Charlotte Bobcats 98-92 in a preseason game Tuesday night.

Red Tornadoes shut out Indians on 'Senior Night'

The Hickory soccer team celebrated 11 of its seniors on Monday, and sent them off the home field in style.

The Red Tornadoes (21-1, 10-1) knocked off rival St. Stephens, 2-1, in a “Battle of Hickory” on the soccer field.

Below are Monday's scores from Catawba County soccer games:

Bunker Hill 3, Draughn 1
Richard Xiong scored three goals to lead the Bears to the conference victory against the Wildcats.

With the victory, Bunker Hill (9-8-1, 7-6-0) clinches at least a tie for fourth place.

Newton-Conover 5, East Burke 0

BREAKING NEWS: Panthers fire GM Marty Hurney

If the Carolina Panthers are going to become the second team to start 1-5 and make it to the playoffs, it won't be under General Manager Marty Hurney.

Hurney was relieved of his duties early Monday morning, the team announced. He had served as the team's GM since 2002.

Another Sunday went by and the Carolina Panthers suffered yet another heartbreaking defeat.

Marred by a few disputable calls late in their game against the Dallas Cowboys, the Panthers dropped their fifth contest of the season, 19-14, at Bank of America Stadium in front of 73,981 fans.

14-point fourth quarter helps Wofford stun ASU

October 21, 2012

Behind 14 fourth quarter points, eighth-ranked Wofford stunned No. 13 Appalachian State, 38-28, on the football field Saturday in Boone at Kidd-Brewer Stadium.

It was the first time since 2002 that ASU (5-3, 3-2) had lost at home to Wofford (6-1, 4-1).

Bears score 31-straight points, knock off Mars Hill

Lenoir-Rhyne rallied from an 18-point deficit to stun Mars Hill on the football field Saturday, 34-21, in a South Atlantic Conference showdown at Moretz Stadium.

VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS: 3 move on, 4 eliminated

The first round of the prep volleyball playoffs was held on Saturday. Seven Catawba County teams were in action.

After these games were over, three Catawba County schools moved on, including Maiden, Newton-Conover and St. Stephens.

Four schools had their seasons ended, including Bandys, Bunker Hill, Fred T. Foard and Hickory.

Red Devils top Vikings, force tie atop CVAC standings

South Iredell's 19-game win steak in the Catawba Valley 2A is over after Newton-Conover knocked off the Vikings 31-21 in Troutman on Friday.

The game's result ties the conference standings three ways between Newton-Conover (7-3, 5-1), South Iredell (8-2, 5-1) and Maiden (7-3, 5-1).
