BREAKING: New Trojans coach to be named Tuesday

Bandys High School has called for a noon press conference on Tuesday to name only its fifth football coach in the past 49 years.

After head coach Randy Lowman decided to step down as head football coach after 26 years, as well as athletic director effective Dec. 31, Bandys High School announced it would have a replacement named either this past Friday or this Tuesday.

Behind a franchise-record 19 3-pointers, the Spurs clobbered the Charlotte Bobcats 132-102 at Time Warner Cable Arena.

The 20th-ranked Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team picked up an 83-32 road victory against Tri-County Technical College on Sunday.

The entire line up for CVCC (13-0, 1-0) scored during Sunday's game, including a team-high 18 points from Anika Jones. Kadesha Gibbs added 12 points, Lativa Lee had 11 points and Matrice Sweezy scored 10 points.

The Newton-Conover, Fred T. Foard and St. Stephens wrestling teams captured titles on Saturday at their respective tournaments.

The Newton-Conover wrestling team claimed the team title at the Freedom Invitational. Several Red Devil wrestlers also placed in the top four of their respective weight classes.

Bandys 86, Cherryville 18

The Lady Trojans improve to 4-0 with a 68-point victory Friday.

Madi Story scored 14 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and made six steals in the Bandys victory. Sara Goble scored 13 points, while Morgan Bibey, Sierra Brotherton and Alex Wagner each tallied 10 points.

Volunteer cross-country coach Lomax passes away

A longtime volunteer track and field coach for Maiden and Fred T. Foard high schools passed away this week.

Ricky Lomax, who spent time with both the Blue Devils’ and Tigers’ track and field programs, passed away this past Sunday at his home. He was 54 years old.

CVCC wins 7th game, knocks off Montreat JVs

The Catawba Valley Community College men’s basketball team ended a two-game losing streak with a 82-62 victory against the Montreat College JV squad on Thursday at the Tarlton Complex.

St. Stephens' Dylan Beiland signs with N.C. Central

Senior baseball player Dylan Beiland signed with North Carolina Central University on Thursday.
