49ers change their 2013, 2014 football schedules

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte 49ers are making changes to their 2013 and 2014 football schedules.

Next season's schedule is changing with word of a home game against Division III Wesley College on Nov. 9. That game will take the place of a previously scheduled home contest against North Greenville.

Coach Brad Lambert's team has also moved its 2013 game against Old Dominion to Nov. 16.

McRee, Ikard race to replace Johnson as Maiden QB

For the first time in three years, Maiden High School has a battle for the top quarterback position.

Matt Johnson, a three-year starter at quarterback for the Blue Devils, graduated this past June after he tallied 1,789 passing yards, 1,077 rushing yards and 30 total touchdowns in 2011.

2 prep football teams change helmet designs

Fred T. Foard and Maiden high schools have decided to change their football helmet designs starting with this season.

The new designs were officially released during both team's picture days on Monday.

Panthers' Smith bruises knee, held out of practice

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith was held out of the second half of Tuesday morning's practice after bruising his left knee.

Coach Ron Rivera says Smith is "fine" and anticipates he will return to practice Wednesday. Rivera says the decision was made to ice Smith's knee right away.

Kicker Crawley helping to bolster Foard special teams

When fans of the Fred T. Foard football team and spectators alike show up at the FCA Jamboree on Wednesday, they will all notice a new addition to the Tigers’ kicking game.

After the departures of part-time kickers Zach Schellenberger and Tanner Fleming, senior Rebecca Crawley joins the Tigers to aid their special teams.

Drive slide by Crawdads on Johns' hits, 3-0

Only totaling six total hits, the Greenville Drive managed to muster enough offense to escape with a 3-0 home victory over the Hickory Crawdads on Monday.

Two of those six hits came off of the bat of leadoff hitter and second baseman Bryan Johns, who plated two runs in the contest.

Rivera: WR Gettis could be back in 4-5 days

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Panthers coach Ron Rivera says trainers are optimistic wide receiver David Gettis will be back on the practice field in about "four or five days."

Rivera says Gettis, who started 15 games for the Panthers in 2010, will not play for Carolina (No. 20 in the AP Pro32) in its preseason home opener Saturday night against the Houston Texans.

'Dads 2B Nick Urbanus has been around the globe

During the past 20 seasons of Hickory Crawdads, the team's roster has featured players — from the United States, South America and Canada.

Now until this year did it feature a player from the Netherlands.

Shortstop Nick Urbanus is the first Crawdad to ever come from Holland.

Indians' Bunting excited about his first season

In his first-ever season of head coaching, St. Stephens' Chris Bunting admits the first few months leading into the season have been entertaining.

Despite a small coaching staff and only 30 players on the varsity squad, the new chief for the Indians is hoping to lead his team to a successful 2012 campaign.
