N-CHS records its 15th shutout, blanks Lexington

For the 15th time this season, the Newton-Conover boys soccer team recorded a shutout on Monday.

The Red Devils (22-1) scored to goals early and added two goals in the second half, pulling away for the 4-0 victory against Lexington.

Mustangs defeat Blue Devils on gridiron, 48-13

Heavy rain and lightning forced Maiden to move its home football contest with East Lincoln to Monday night.

The Mustangs handed the Blue Devils a 48-13 loss on Monday night at Blue Devil Stadium, dropping Maiden’s record to 5-5 overall and 2-4 in conference games.

Tiger top Cougars, meet Mavs in finals rematch

Fred T. Foard went up 2-0 at halftime against Asheville and held off a late charge by the Cougars to come away with a 4-2 win on Monday in the second round of the 3A boys soccer playoffs.

Bears remain unbeaten, hold off the Eagles, 35-32

The fourth-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne football team jumped out to a 25-point advantage and held off a furious rally to defeat No. 16 Carson-Newman, 35-32, Saturday in a South Atlantic Conference showdown at Burke-Tarr Stadium.

Asheville (12-7-2) at Fred T. Foard (18-5-2), 6:30 p.m. Monday

Red Devils overcome elements, Bears in 31-6 win

October 31, 2014

It wasn’t pretty, but Newton-Conover was able to end its two-game losing skid in the rain on Friday night with a 31-6 victory against Bunker Hill in Claremont.

The Red Devils improve to 7-2-1 overall and 4-2 in the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A, while the Bears drop their overall record to 0-10 and conference record to 0-6.

Spartans use second half to surge past Tigers

October 31, 2014

Despite trailing 14-13 at halftime, the Fred T. Foard football team was outscored 19-7 in the second half of a 33-21 road loss to rival South Caldwell in Lenoir.

Matt Williams led Foard (5-5, 3-3) with three touchdowns, including two touchdown passes of 20 and 3 yards to wide receiver Ryan Campbell.
