Red Devils finish as 2A wrestling state runners-up

One of the best seasons ever on the wrestling mat for Newton-Conover came to a close on Saturday.

The Red Devils finished as the team state runners-up at the 2A state wrestling tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Six of the 10 Red Devil wrestlers that qualified for states finished in the top six of each weight class, which earned them a spot on the championship podium.

Bandys' Anthony Christopher wins 2A state title

With his brother Andrew hoisting him high in the air, Bandys wrestler Anthony Christopher celebrated a lifelong achievement at the Greensboro Coliseum on Saturday.

Christopher defeated Croatan's Kyle Colborn by a 6-3 decision to claim the 195-pound 2A state championship — the 13th Trojan wrestler since 1995 to claim an individual title.

Four county wrestlers in 2A, 3A wrestling finals

Four Catawba County wrestlers advanced to the finals of their respective weight classes on Friday at the 2A and 3A individual state tournament in Greensboro.

Three of those four come from the 2A ranks, including Newton-Conover sophomore Austin Klutz and Bandys seniors Andrew Brotherton and Anthony Christopher.

Trojans beat Cavaliers for 36th straight home win

The Bandys girls basketball team’s home winning streak remains in tact, as the Lady Trojans head to Greensboro for the fourth straight year.

Facing East Burke for the fourth time this season, the Lady Trojans (27-2) won the most pivotal of those match ups on Friday, 58-55, to advance to the 2A Western Regionals.

Panthers cut veteran DT Edwards after two seasons

March 1, 2013

The Carolina Panthers cut veteran defensive tackle Ron Edwards on Friday as the team continues to work to clear cap space by the March 12 deadline.

Edwards, who has been in the league for the past 12 seasons, spent the past two years with the Panthers. In 11 games for Carolina in 2012, Edwards recorded 16 tackles and a sack.

Matthews, Tomberlin & Turner leaders on court, field

More than just teammates on the court, three of the seven seniors on the Fred T. Foard boys basketball team are hoping to set a new standard for Tigers.

Spencer Matthews, Daniel Tomberlin and Jordan Turner have as close a bond as any on the team, having played not only basketball together, but were members of the Foard soccer team, as well.

PREP WRESTLING: 19 county wrestlers still alive

Nineteen wrestlers from Catawba County are still alive in the winner's bracket after the first day of competition at the 2A and 3A individual state wrestling championships on Thursday.
