When Maiden traveled to Bandys for a battle of unbeaten girls tennis teams in the Catawba Valley 2A on Tuesday, something had to give.

The Lady Blue Devils won 5-of-6 singles matches, coming away with a 7-2 victory against the Lady Trojans in Catawba.

Franklin Wepner paced the Red Devils (3-2-1, 1-0-0) with two goals, while Chandler Johnson and Turner Glynn added one each.

Indians win ‘Morgan Bowl’, shut out Cougars

It was a special night for both the St. Stephens and Alexander Central high school boys soccer programs on Monday.

The match-up between the Indians and Cougars featured a family coaching affair between father Steve Morgan and his son, Cory.

The Indians, led by Cory, immerged victorious in the game with the 4-0 shut out.

The St. Stephens volleyball team picked up a 3-0 road victory over the Freedom Patriots on Monday.
With the win, the Lady Indians move to 10-1 on the season.

Katelyn Houser led Saint with 13 assists, six kills and five aces. Jenna Boliek, Marisa Jones and Bailey Cloninger added five kills each. Cloninger also made 11 assists.

Anderson named SAC Defensive Player of The Week

Lenoir-Rhyne's Joe Anderson has been named the South Atlantic Conference Football Defensive Player Of The Week, league officials announced Monday.

Anderson, a sophomore defensive back from Lilburn, Ga., led Lenoir-Rhyne with a team-high 10 tackles to go along with two pass break-ups and an interception in the Bears' 20-2 home-opening win over Davidson last Saturday night at Moretz Stadium.

Hale Irwin joins Greater Hickory Classic field

All-time PGA Champions Tour wins leader Hale Irwin has joined the field for the 10th annual Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn presented by Kia Motors.

The 10th anniversary Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn is set for Oct. 8-14, 2012 on the Jones Course at Rock Barn Golf & Spa.

QB Cam Newton struggles in 16-10 loss to Bucs
