Behind Pope's 214 yards, Red Devils clinch title share

Marquis Pope and the Newton-Conover football team made sure it would get a piece of the final Catawba Valley 2A football title.

The Red Devils (8-3, 6-1) blew out winless West Caldwell in Lenoir on Friday, 56-6.

"It was a good overall win," said N-C coach Brint Russell. "We had a good team effort all the way around."

Blue Devils top Wildcats, earn piece of CVAC title

Jake McRee threw two touchdown passes, Jordan Bess ran for a score and Ian Oliver added a 29-yard field goal to help Maiden defeat Draughn at home Friday, 23-13.

With the victory and wins by Newton-Conover and South Iredell, the Blue Devils (8-3, 6-1) clinch a share of the final Catawba Valley 2A football title.

FOOTBALL ROUND-UP: Trojans tramble Bears

Quarterback Anthony Toscano threw two touchdown passes to Brian Spade and three other Trojans scored rushing touchdowns to help Bandys knock off Bunker Hill, 45-14, in Claremont on Friday.

Toscano tossed both of his touchdowns to Spade to open the first and second halfs, respectively, connecting from 24 yards out in the first quarter and 63 yards away in the third quarter.

Bobcats collapse in 100-90 loss to Bucks

On a day when the Charlotte Bobcats hosted a “Cool School Field Trip” for area students, the Milwaukee Bucks played the role of bully.

Up 20 points in the third quarter, the Bobcats (1-6) struggled down the stretch in a 100-90 home loss to the Bucks on Thursday morning.

Bobcats head coach Mike Dunlap said many factors contributed to the loss.

Hornets one game away from CCFL title game

The Catawba County Hornets are one game away from the Central Carolinas Football League champion game, but one team stands in the way.

The Hornets host the Richmond County Golden Bears on Saturday at Westside/Jaycee Park in one of two semifinal match-ups in the CCFL playoffs.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Indians, Blue Devils eliminated

The Maiden and St. Stephens volleyball teams had their seasons ended on Thursday in the third round of the state playoffs.

Down 2-1 in their match with West Henderson (25-3), the Lady Indians (24-2) battled deep into the fourth set to stay alive, but eventually fell 33-31 to drop the match and have their season ended.

Bears win 10th game behind Xiong's hat trick

The Bunker Hill soccer team honored its six seniors during Wednesday's game against Bandys, but it was a freshman that stole the show.

Richard Xiong continued a standout first season for the Bears, netting three goals to lead the Bears to their 10th victory of the season against the Trojans, 3-1.
