Tigers topple Pioneers, advance to NWC boys final

The Fred T. Foard boys basketball team advanced to the Northwestern 3A/4A tournament final on Tuesday with a 61-43 win against Watauga at David Craft Gymnasium.

The top-seeded Tigers (21-4) advance to Friday’s final where they will meet the No. 2 seed Hickory Red Tornadoes (21-5) in a rematch of this past Friday’s 62-59 win by Foard at Copas Gymnasium.

Red Devil squads advance to CVAC second round

The Newton-Conover girls and boys basketball teams both advanced to the second round of the Catawba Valley Athletic 2A tournament with victories on the court Monday.

The Lady Red Devils knocked off West Caldwell 56-47, while the Red Devil boys picked up a 74-57 win against county rival Bandys.

Minors help Red Devils capture first 2A dual title

A pair of wrestlers with the last name Minor helped Newton-Conover reach a major milestone on Saturday — the school's first 2A dual team state wrestling championship.

Tigers win 3A dual title, school's second boys crown

When Nick Rotenberry's hand was raised on Saturday, history was made yet again at Fred T. Foard High School.

Rotenberry's 13-5 major decision against Morehead's Cameron Sanders helped the Tigers clinch the 3A dual team wrestling state championship.

Saturday's title win gives Foard its second state championship in a boys sport — both coming in wrestling (2011, 2013).

Hannah’s 38 lifts Tornadoes to share of NWC crown

Yazmen Hannah picked the biggest game of the season to have the biggest game of her career.

The Hickory sophomore guard scored a career-high 38 points on Friday, helping the Lady Red Tornadoes (22-2, 10-2) knock off Fred T. Foard 82-59 to grab a share of the Northwestern 3A/4A regular season basketball crown.

Tigers take down rival Tornadoes, NWC hoops title

The Fred T. Foard boys basketball team picked up a conference-clinching victory against rival Hickory before standing room only crowd at Jerry Copas Gymnasium on Friday.

The Tigers improve to 20-4 overall and 10-2 in Northwestern 3A/4A, while the Red Tornadoes fall to 19-5 overall and 9-3 in the NWC.
