Cline, Coulter and LaFrancis sign with colleges

April 11, 2013

Three Newton-Conover athletes made their college choices official on Wednesday.

Among those who committed include a pair of senior football players, including quarterback Kevin Cline signing with Carson-Newman and fullback/linebacker Matt Coulter inking with Wingate.

Red Devils senior boys soccer player Jake LaFrancis also signed to compete this fall at Catawba College.

Foard softball falls to Alexander Central in extras

In a tight softball game between Fred T. Foard and Alexander Central, it took just one mistake to make all the difference.

Lady Cougars center fielder Amanda Sports scored from third base in the top of the 10th inning after an arrent throw from Foard catcher McKenzie Dziendiel.

The run helped AC pick up a 2-1 victory in 10 innings against the Lady Tigers.

Red Devils win 83rd straight CVAC tennis match

The Newton-Conover tennis team continued its march toward another CVAC title on Tuesday with an 8-1 win against Maiden.

The victory by the Red Devils is their 83rd straight conference win — a record that dates back to 2007.

Red Devils sweep team, individual county golf titles

Monday was a good day to be a golfer at Newton-Conover High School.

The Red Devils took team honors during the 21st Catawba County championships, while Newton-Conover’s Trey Burton earned medalist honors at the event.

Williams clutch homer lifts Crawdads past Drive

April 8, 2013

A two-out, two-run homer by left fielder Nick Williams in the bottom of the ninth inning helped give the Hickory Crawdads a 5-4 victory against Greenville on Monday.

The win by the 'Dads over the Drive is their second of the season.

The Crawdads hit three home runs in Monday night’s game, including bombs by second baseman Ryan Rua, third baseman Joey Gallo and Williams.

Crawdads drop their season opener to Greensboro

April 5, 2013

A two-RBI single in the top of the eighth inning by Cody Keefer allowed the Greensboro Grasshoppers to spoil the season opener for the Hickory Crawdads with a 4-2 victory on Friday.

Lewis Brinson led Hickory (0-1) with three hits, including an 2-out RBI single in the bottom of the second inning that plated ‘Dads designated hitter Jordan Akins.

Lady Tigers score early, shut out Lady Trojans

April 5, 2013

The Fred T. Foard softball team scored three runs in the first and added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on its way to a 4-0 victory against Bandys on Friday.

Olivia Purvis, Addie Bolick, Courtney Hull and Lexi Shubert each went 1-for-3 for the Lady Tigers in the game.

Meggie Gentle and Kat Barrow led Bandys with one hit each.
