Future Catawba Valley Classic plans are finalized

Finalizing its 28th annual event, the Dick’s Sporting Goods Catawba Valley Classic committee set its sights on the event’s future on Friday.

Eight area high schools were presented checks, which each totaled a record $3,262.11, from their participation from the annual prep basketball tournament held in late December 2014.

Former Hickory basketball standout Jada Payne reached an important career milestone on Wednesday.

The redshirt junior at East Carolina recorded her 1,000th career point,helping the Lady Pirates defeat Southern Methodist University, 67-53.

Senior sisters anchor Bunker Hill basketball family

Born only a few minutes apart, sisters Kayla and Kierra Garrett have been inseparable.

“When we improve together, I feel like we are a lot stronger,” Kierra said of her sister.

The two Bunker Hill senior basketball players are part of the program’s turnaround in the past few seasons, helping lead the Lady Bears to another successful winter campaign.

The Southern District 7 Athletic 2A boys and girls basketball tournaments have been canceled, according to a statement released by the conference on Wednesday night.

The semifinals scheduled for Thursday and the finals for Friday will not be played at Catawba Valley Community College.

In his first season, Bears’ Briley chases a state title

Entering his first season of high school wrestling this winter, Bernie Briley knew the competition would be stiff.

“I approached this season not expecting to have the record I had in middle school,” said the Bunker Hill freshman. “I expected it to be a lot harder. I heard a lot of stories from past wrestlers. I was expecting an average freshman record, like 15-19 or 15-24.”

BREAKING: Conference hoops tournament cancelled

The Northwestern 3A/4A has officially cancelled its girls and boys basketball tournaments, as of Wednesday afternoon.

Executive Secretary Lavell Hall sent an email to local media just after 1 p.m. Wednesday informing them of the conference's decision.

Hickory's Peterson claims two state championships

Hickory’s Emmaline Peterson experienced success early in her high school swimming career, winning a state title last year as a freshman.

The Red Tornadoes sophomore repeated her performance Thursday during the 3A state championship meet in Raleigh, winning the 500-yard freestyle event again while adding a state title in the 200-yard freestyle.

LR baseball program is off to best start since 1996

Entering this season, the Lenoir-Rhyne baseball program had an overall losing record in its 84-year history — 1,175 wins, 1,179 losses and seven ties.
