Hope wins state title; Red Devils are 2A runners-up

Newton-Conover's Ah'Ron Hope won a state title at 285 pounds on Saturday at the NCHSAA Individual State Wrestling tournament held in Greensboro, helping the Red Devils finish as state runners-up at the event.

PREP BASKETBALL: Playoff brackets are released

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) has released its preliminary brackets for the state 2A and 3A basketball playoffs.

Below is a look at those brackets, which are currently being worked on or finalized:

2A boys brackets
No. 32 Bunker Hill (11-11) at No. 1 Smoky Mountain (22-0)
No. 25 Lincolnton (16-6) at No. 8 Parkwood (12-10)

Future Catawba Valley Classic plans are finalized

Finalizing its 28th annual event, the Dick’s Sporting Goods Catawba Valley Classic committee set its sights on the event’s future on Friday.

Eight area high schools were presented checks, which each totaled a record $3,262.11, from their participation from the annual prep basketball tournament held in late December 2014.

“When we improve together, I feel like we are a lot stronger,” Kierra said of her sister.

The two Bunker Hill senior basketball players are part of the program’s turnaround in the past few seasons, helping lead the Lady Bears to another successful winter campaign.

The Southern District 7 Athletic 2A boys and girls basketball tournaments have been canceled, according to a statement released by the conference on Wednesday night.

The semifinals scheduled for Thursday and the finals for Friday will not be played at Catawba Valley Community College.

In his first season, Bears’ Briley chases a state title

Entering his first season of high school wrestling this winter, Bernie Briley knew the competition would be stiff.

“I approached this season not expecting to have the record I had in middle school,” said the Bunker Hill freshman. “I expected it to be a lot harder. I heard a lot of stories from past wrestlers. I was expecting an average freshman record, like 15-19 or 15-24.”

BREAKING: Conference hoops tournament cancelled

The Northwestern 3A/4A has officially cancelled its girls and boys basketball tournaments, as of Wednesday afternoon.

Executive Secretary Lavell Hall sent an email to local media just after 1 p.m. Wednesday informing them of the conference's decision.
