BREAKING: Panthers' Hardy goes on exempt list

September 17, 2014

Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy has agreed to go on the Exempt/Commissioner’s Permission List, according to sources and multiple media reports.

Hardy will still be paid his salary of approximately $770,000 per game while on the list, but will not be allowed to participate in all team activities, including practices and games. However, he will be allowed in the team’s facility.

Frye, Tapia push Red Devils past Wolves, 2-1

The Newton-Conover boys soccer team survived a downpour in the first half against Lincolnton on Tuesday.

The Red Devils poured on the offense during the second half in a 2-1 victory against the Wolves.

Newton-Conover moves to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in Southern District 7 games this season.

Red Devils move up to eighth in latest AP poll

September 16, 2014

Newton-Conover has moved up one spot in the third Associated Press poll of the season.

Coming off a 13-13 tie against Freedom, the Red Devils rose from No. 9 to No. 8 in the poll, earning a total of 52 votes.

Newton-Conover also received one first-place vote for the second-straight week in the poll.

Boyles, Ramirez win titles; Saint, Hickory top teams

History was made at Murray’s Mill on Monday during the 10th Annual Catawba County Cross-Country Championships.

Maiden’s Corbin Boyles won his fourth-straight individual title, while St. Stephens’ freshman Ashley Ramirez impressed with a win in the girls title race.

Panthers avoid distractions, silence Lions, 24-7

Quarterback Cam Newton returned to the field Sunday against the Detroit Lions, leading the Carolina Panthers to their first 2-0 start since the 2008 season.

Newton tallied 300 yards of total offense and the Panther defense forced three Detroit turnovers in a 24-7 victory at Bank of America Stadium.

Tigers topple Rebels, win second game of season

Weather delayed the second half of prep football between Fred T. Foard and West Lincoln high schools on Friday night.

The storms couldn't delay the inevitable result.

Behind running back Jacob Schmidt and quarterback Matt Williams, the Tigers ran past the Rebels for their second win of the season on Saturday, 42-28.
