South Iredell turned five Newton-Conover turnovers into 20 points and a Catawba Valley Athletic Conference championship as the Vikings conquered the Red Devils 32-28.
âFive turnovers. Thatâs about all I can tell you,â said Newton-Conover coach Nick Bazzle. âYou canât turn the ball over like that. It was too sloppy a game. I knew coming in that we just canât make mistakes, and we did, and it cost us.â
It cost Newton-Conover a perfect season and possibly cut into the Red Devilsâ chances for home-field advantage when the playoffs start after next week.
For many Lutherans in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the past year was spent deciding where they belong. After the synod approved homosexual men and women to become ordained pastors in ELCA churches while involved in a monogamous, same-sex relationship, some Lutherans stayed in the synod when others voted to leave.
While hundreds of churches decided to leave the ELCA after the August 2009 decision became public, other churches in the synod stayed.
Area churches took a stand and said âNoâ to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Americaâs vote to allow ordained pastors to be in same-gender, monogamous relationships. Now they've formed a new synod, which they say, follows the âsacred scripture.â
When churches started leaving the ELCA, the North American Lutheran Church was formed and chartered Aug. 27 in Columbus, Ohio. Currently, there are about 50 churches that officially left the ELCA after two votes per congregation to leave and a dismissal from the synod council. Most of those churches joined the NALC.

WASHINGTON (AP) â Authorities in Dubai intercepted an explosive device bound for a Chicago-area Jewish institution aboard a cargo jet, officials disclosed Friday, triggering a worldwide alert and fears that al-Qaida was attempting to carry out fresh terror attacks.
A second package â like the first, shipped from Yemen â was discovered aboard a plane in England. It, too, was addressed to a Jewish organization in the Chicago area, although there was no immediate confirmation about its contents.

Itâs time for the main event. After weeks of anticipation, the biggest game in the Catawba Valley 2-A this season will kickoff Friday when Newton-Conover travels to South Iredell. Both teams enter the game 9-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play. The winner will most likely be the 2010 CVAC champion.
âThe game should be a good one,â Vikings head coach Scott Miller said. âWeâre happy to be battling Newton-Conover for the championship, because they are a good, well-coached football team.â

South Newton Elementary School third-grader Brendan Young raised $2.25 in August during Soldiers Reunion by selling popsicles to ease the summer heat.
Instead of keeping the hard-earned cash to himself, he donated it to Newton-Conover City Schools' backpack program, which ensures no student goes without food when school isn't in session.
"It gives me that feeling that I feel good for doing it," Brendan said of his donation.
