Fourth man identified in train crash

Hickory Police learned the identity of a man who fled from a car before it was struck by a train near Union Square last weekend.

Dontea Kennedy, 21, of Maiden, allegedly got out of a 2010 Dodge Challenger early Sunday morning and fled on foot before a train collided with the car, injuring one of the passengers. Police didn't know Kennedy's identity at the time of the crash, only that there was a fourth male in the car.

Counselors advise, assist students

For Catawba County school counselors, assisting students isn't about simply sitting down and talking about their feelings.

Counselors in the school system try to ensure every student has the emotional and mental support they need to learn on a daily basis.

Officials from Catawba County Schools and Newton-Conover City Schools said these positions are vital in the school system, especially during times when economic woes impact students, as well as their parents.

Teen gets attorney in murder case

The teenager accused of killing his roommate with an axe then carving a word into the man's body received court-appointed counsel Monday during his first appearance in court.

No fewer than four officers from the Catawba County Sheriff's Office were in District Court on Wednesday as Michael Joseph Anderson, 19, was led into the courtroom wearing a neon green jumpsuit. Anderson appeared emotionless as Judge Robert A. Mullinax told him he was charged with murder.

Newton 'not getting the job done'

Collapsed buildings, household garbage and unlicensed vehicles filled with trash clutter a property on Newton's North Ashe Avenue.
It isn't the only city property with violations of Newton's nuisance and abandoned vehicle ordinances, but Worth Arnold Jr.'s residence did seem to be a final straw for the city's mayor.

Riding waves: Correll enjoying sport of watercross, while having experiences of a lifetime

At age 41, Derek Correll is riding the biggest waves in his life.

Correll, a Sherrills Ford native, has been involved in the sport of watercross since 1987.

He initially became active in the sport by spending time with friends who were interested in jet skis as well.

"I started working on jet skis," Correll said. "I met up with some guys who were doing the same thing I was doing at the time. They also did their own maintenance work. I got involved with them a little bit and started learning things from them."

Fire destroys mobile home

An apparent grease fire destroyed a Conover mobile home Tuesday, displacing a family of three and leaving them with nothing.

Firefighters responded to a reported structure fire at Lyle Haven Mobile Home Park off County Home Road in Conover. The blaze was reported shortly before 3:30 p.m.

Conover Fire Department arrived on the scene with three engines and a ladder truck to find a fully involved fire at trailer lot F3.

CVCC opens new student center

February 15, 2011

Out with the old and in with the new.

Catawba Valley Community College christened its new student center Tuesday with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony, as students, faculty and members of the community watched.

The planning for this center started in early 2008, with a conversation between CVCC president Dr. Garrett Hinshaw and Jim Powell, of ADW Architects in Charlotte.

Brenda Gail Williams Lail, 57, of Conover, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2011, at Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley. A celebration of life and worship service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011, at Tri City Baptist Church.

Jeffery Lee “Yogi” Alexander, 53, of Hickory, passed away Feb. 14, 2011, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.  The Alexander family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Hickory.

Overturned truck closes U.S. 321

Portions of U.S. 321 between Newton and Maiden were closed Tuesday after a tractor trailer overturned.

The crash happened shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday when a tractor trailer flipped over at the intersection of U.S. 321 Business and Elliott Lane, just outside of Newton city limits. 

Several powerlines were downed from the crash. The live wires stretched across the road as emergency responders worked on the scene. 

The driver of the truck was transported by ambulance to Catawba Valley Medical Center. 

Murder suspect took 'too many' pills

A 19-year-old who shot and mutilated his roommate confessed his actions to 9-1-1 dispatchers, even detailing the circumstances that brought him into the Mountain View home of the victim.
“Um, I took some pills and then some more pills and I murdered my roommate,” Michael Anderson told a 9-1-1 dispatcher with Catawba County Communications. “I shot him three times and then used an axe and mutilated his body.”
Anderson has been charged with murder in the Monday morning death of Stephens Starr, 36, in the Mountain View area. Anderson called 9-1-1 about 4:54 a.m. Monday.
