The Jimmy Clausen era in Carolina got off to a slow start Sunday at Bank of America Stadium. He fumbled a snap at the Bengals’ 30-yard line, his first pass flew into the chest of Cincinnati defensive end Frostee Rucker, and he threw an interception from just outside the red zone.
All that happened in the first half.
“I really don’t get too nervous out there,” Clausen said when asked about butterflies before his first career start. “I’m just trying to go out there and execute and make plays.”
Preparations for the Ensure Classic are in full swing.
The eighth annual Ensure Classic at Rock Barn presented by Kia Motors starts Monday and continues through Oct. 3.
More than 80,000 people are expected to attend the event and watch the 78 players vie for the top prize of more than $200,000, not to mention the honor of being named tournament winner.
Although the event starts Monday, crews were working for weeks to make the Ensure Classic run smoothly.

Newton-Conover converted four Maiden turnovers into touchdowns as the Red Devils defeated the Blue Devils 48-26 in both teams’ conference opener.
“That was the difference in the game, I think,” said Newton-Conover’s Jake Cansler, who intercepted Maiden quarterback Matt Johnson’s first pass of the game and later recovered two fumbles. “We got the ball back to the offense plenty of times.”
Maiden coach Brian Brown, too, said turnovers were the difference in the contest.
With the score tied at 14 at halftime, Bunker Hill needed to make something happen against East Burke.
It did exactly that.
The Bears scored on the opening drive of the second half Friday and forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff to seize control of their conference opener. The Bears scored five touchdowns in the second half en route to a 47-14 win at home Friday over the Cavaliers. Its the first time since 1980 the Bears started a season 5-0.
Donating thousands of dollars to area charities is par for the course during the Ensure Classic at Rock Barn.
All net proceeds from the tournament are donated to charities and other organizations throughout Catawba County and surrounding area.
The event, to date, raised more than $900,000 for charities, but Jim Correll, the tournament's executive director, doesn't want to stop there.
"This year, our goal is to surpass the $1-million mark," he said.

Conference play begins this week in the Catawba Valley 2-A, with two of the leagues’ biggest rivals set to square off Friday. Newton-Conover (4-0) travels to Maiden (3-1), and both teams look to start league play on stable ground.
“It starts this week for everybody, so if you win, you’re tied for first place, which is how you want to start,” Red Devils head coach Nick Bazzle said. “We’re getting one of the big guns first this year.”
But fans of both teams know this matchup is more than just the kickoff of this year’s conference schedule; it’s also about bragging rights.
The first game Thursday at Bandys between the Trojans and the Newton-Conover Red Devils turned into a battle of will. The teams were tied at 25 and neither budged until the Red Devils scored three straight points — on a kill from Isabella Zaliagiris and back-to-back Bandys errors — to earn the 30-28 win.
The Red Devils rode that momentum winning the next two games 25-15 and 25-22 to get the 3-0 sweep at Bandys, and they took control of the Catawba Valley 2-A conference.
