Mike Helms has resigned as the head coach of the Hickory High School football team.

Dr. Walter Hart, superintendent of Hickory Public Schools, released a statement Wednesday at 3:16 p.m. about Helm’s status as Hickory High football coach.

Bunker Hill wins second-straight tournament title

A year to the day it won last year’s Southern District 7 Athletic 2A tournament title, the Bunker Hill volleyball team made lightning strike twice on Wednesday.

The Lady Bears came out of the gate strong in a 3-1 win against rival Newton-Conover in the tournament final held at West Caldwell High School.

Boyles wins fourth title, Bandys boys three-peat

Corbin Boyles finished his undefeated streak in conference championship meets on Wednesday.

The Maiden senior won his fourth-straight conference championship at Wednesday’s SD-7 Cross-Country title meet at Southside Park in Newton.

The Bandys boys cross-country team won its fourth-straight team title, led by fourth-place finisher Yates Goodson.

Ray awarded Order of the Long Leaf Pine

Sylvia K. Ray is North Carolina's newest member of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. The former managing editor of The Observer News Enterprise was surprised with the award during Tuesday’s Rotary meeting.The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is awarded by the governor as the state's highest civilian honor.

‘Healing Haven’

Katheryn Harlan was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003, causing a double mastectomy and a burst in her motivation for a cure.

Harlan began raising money in benefit of a cure in 2005 when she partnered with the Susan G. Komen foundation to insure that the money that her project raised was going to be used appropriately. Harlan continued her partnership with Komen through 2006.
