Hibbert leads Pacers to 99-77 win over Bobcats

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Roy Hibbert scored 20 points to help the Indiana Pacers beat the Charlotte Bobcats 99-77 on Saturday night.

Hibbert, who briefly left the game with a sprained right ankle, also had eight rebounds and three blocks. Tyler Hansbrough scored 15 points, Darren Collison had 14, and Danny Granger and George Hill each added 13 for the Pacers (6-2), who improved to 3-0 at home. Indiana was coming off an 87-74 win at Boston on Friday night.

Red Devils sweep Bears on the basketball court

Newton-Conover took an early lead and pulled away from Bunker Hill for a 66-50 CVAC win.

Kevin Halloway led the Red Devils (8-6, 3-1) with 14 points.
Taylor Simmons netted a team-high 14 points for the Bears (2-13, 2-3).

Newton-Conover 83, Bunker Hill 18

Kadesha Gibbs, Taylor Petty and Shynese Whitener combined for 56 points to lead the Lady Red Devils (11-3, 3-1) to the win against the Lady Bears.
Gibbs also notched her 1,000th career point in Friday’s game.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Maiden wins second CVAC game

Maiden improved to 5-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play with a win over Bandys in boys basketball on Friday, 56-36.

Matt Johnson led all Blue Devil scorers with 15 points, while Jason Gantt pitched in 11 points.

Colton Medlin scored a game-high 17 points in the loss for Bandys (1-13, 0-5)

Fred T. Foard 68, Hibriten 54

The Tigers (11-4, 1-3) ended a 27-game conference losing streak by knocking off the Panthers on the road.

Jordan Turner scored 25 points, while Brice Falgout added 14 points in the victory for Foard.

Smith's lifts Hawks past Bobcats 102-96 in OT

CHARLOTTE — The Atlanta Hawks went to overtime for a second straight night, pulling out a 102-96 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday behind 23 points and 13 rebounds from Josh Smith.

The Hawks lost in triple-overtime to the Miami Heat the night before, but made sure there wouldn't be multiple extra periods needed by scoring the first seven points, with early 3-pointers by Jeff Teague and Joe Johnson.

Marvin Williams added 15 points and nine rebounds, and Al Horford scored 15 points for the Hawks (5-3).

CCS hires search help

January 6, 2012

Catawba County Schools (CCS) will look to state search professionals in its quest to find the system's next superintendent.

On Friday, the CCS Board of Education hired the N.C. School Boards Association (NCSBA) to help in the search for a successor to Glenn Barger, who will retire as superintendent June 30. CCS will pay NCSBA a minimum of $10,500 for its services.

NCSBA will advertise the CCS vacancy, collect applications and conduct background checks on potential candidates, among other services. CCS leaders will ultimately choose the new superintendent.

Officials seek input on new library

County officials want citizen input on a planned new library in Sherrills Ford.

Plans call for the new library to be built near the intersection of Sherrills Ford Road and N.C. 150. The new facility will help address space and community needs that the current library building lacks, officials say.

Catawba County has hired an architect and is in the planning stages.

Library officials want citizen input from residents who live in the Sherrills Ford and Terrell areas.

Maiden cat tests positive for rabies

Catawba County officials are reminding residents to properly vaccinate their animals after the first 2012 rabies case was discovered this week.

On Monday, a local veterinarian notified Catawba County Animal Services that a cat needed to be tested for rabies. The cat, which was about four months old, was sent to the State Health Lab in Raleigh for testing. The State Lab notified Catawba County on Thursday afternoon that the cat tested positive for rabies.

Reward offered for copper-theft information

January 6, 2012

A Newton company is offering $2,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to arrests in a recent copper-theft case.

According to the Newton Police Department, suspects broke into an unoccupied warehouse in Newton around Dec. 13 and stole an estimated $200,000 worth of copper wiring. The property at 2855 Nathan St. is owned by The Hadley Company.

The Hadley Company is offering the reward to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of suspects responsible for the theft and damage to the property.
