James Gregory “Greg” Withers, 46, of Maiden, died Thursday, April 5, 2012, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.  Goodin-Drum Funeral Home is serving the Withers family.

Jerold Monroe Wingate, 72, of Maiden, died Wednesday, April 3, 2012, at CMC-Lincoln.  Goodin-Drum Funeral Home is serving the Wingate family.

Conover businesses share tax concerns

Conover business owners have mixed concerns about a new tax system that will increase costs for many retail establishments in the city.

Those concerns include worries about how the increased costs will burden small retail businesses, cause those businesses to pass on costs to customers, force some to close their doors and discourage others from locating in the city.

Kiwanis clubs to honor Zahra with scholarship

A scholarship is being established in the name of Zahra Baker, the 10-year-old girl who was murdered and dismembered in 2010.

The Kiwanis Clubs of Catawba County are planning to use money left over from a playground honoring Zahra Baker to fund a scholarship in her name.

The scholarship will be available to disabled area high school seniors who choose to pursue college education.

State to replace Catawba County bridges

April 6, 2012

The N.C. Department of Transportation awarded $6.2 million this week for the replacement of six bridges in the region, including two in Catawba County.

A design and construction contract was awarded to R.E. Burns & Sons Company Inc. of Statesville. Work can begin as early as April 30 and be completed by Nov. 1, 2014.

This week's criminal convictions

April 5, 2012

The following residents were convicted of felony offenses and sentenced this week in Criminal Superior Court.

* Jody Lee Forbes, 30, of Hickory, was convicted of felony breaking and entering a motor vehicle, felony larceny, felony possess firearm by convicted felon and misdemeanor larceny and was sentenced to 19-23 months in the Department of Correction.

Lady Bears move back into top 25 poll

The Lenoir-Rhyne softball team moved back into the national rankings this week. The Lady Bears are ranked No. 23 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) NCAA Div. II top 25 Poll.

Lenoir-Rhyne is 37-10 on the season, and has won 15 of its last 16 games including eight straight contests.

Crawdads opener postponed due to weather

The kickoff to the 20th season of Hickory Crawdads baseball was delayed on Thursday due to weather.

The 'Dads were scheduled to play at Kannapolis, but the game was postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday with back-to-back seven-inning games starting at 6:05 p.m.
