Conover's busy Wal-Mart shopping center may get more crowded by summer.

And city officials expect all those cars to have a place to fuel up.

Murphy Oil USA plans to build a fuel station and convenience store at the corner of N.C. 16 Business and Zelkova Court NW.

Catawba men hit 5 Boone stores

Two Catawba County residents were arrested in Boone this week after stealing goods from five different stores in town.

Boone police say two men from the Conover area stole $3,700 worth of merchandise from several drug and department stores, including CVC Pharmacy, Walgreens, Harris Teeter, Rite-Aid and Food Lion.

Alexander Central coaching hire looms

Alexander Central High School expects to have a new head football coach after a board of education meeting Wednesday.

Alexander Central High School Principal Doug Rhoney told The O-N-E on Monday that the three finalists for the position include Newton-Conover High School head football coach Nick Bazzle.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Hickory wins third NWC match

HIckory won its third-straight Northwestern conference golf match on Tuesday at Catawba Springs.

The Red Tornadoes tallied a team score of 312, which was two shots better than second-place Hibriten.

St. Stephens finished tied for third with Alexander Central. Both squads carded a team score of 331.

Fred T. Foard finished last with a score of 353.
