Employee injured in chemical plant fire

April 12, 2012

One employee was injured after a chemical fire blazed Thursday afternoon at RPM Wood Finishes Group in Hudson.

The fire started about 3:30 p.m. in a tank in the company's paints and coatings production building, said Gordon Hyde, RPM spokesman.

The fire was contained to that area of the building, and all 250 employees working at the time were evacuated as a precaution.

Bobby Jean Lutz, 76, of Denver, died Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at his residence. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Lutz family.

Clara Black Little, of Maiden, died April 11, 2012. Goodin-Drum Funeral Home is serving the Little family.

Finishing company to create 50 jobs

TSG, a diverse commission products finisher, is consolidating its Pennsylvania-based operations into its existing North Carolina facilities in Long View, Hickory and Conover. Company officials expect the consolidation to create at least 50 jobs in the Greater Hickory Metro and provide an economic boost of at least $1.5 million through employment and equipment.

Zahra playground build begins

Hundreds of volunteers will be on site to construct the Zahra Baker All Children’s Playground today and Saturday at Kiwanis Park in Hickory.

Interest in the build was so strong that leaders had to stop accepting volunteers three days before the event started on Thursday.

Abernathy, Bass among five county Hall inductees

April 11, 2012

Five men will join the 53-person Catawba County Sports Hall of Fame in May.

Jim Correll, the late Bill Bass, David Abernathy, Tom Swatzel and Marion Kirby make up the 2012 Hall of Fame class, which was announced Wednesday at the Hickory Metro Convention Center.

Hickory tops Maiden for Easter title, Warriors third

Hickory claimed its first Catawba County Easter Baseball Classic title since 1999 with a 12-1 mercy rule victory against Maiden on Wednesday at Henkel-Alley Field.

Nick Guarino went 3-for-4 from the plate, including two runs and two RBIs. He also pitched seven innings, striking out four, walking two and allowing two hits and one earned run.

Painter, Raymond to transfer from NC State

RALEIGH — North Carolina State's DeShawn Painter and Jaqawn Raymond plan to transfer.

Team spokesman Dwayne Harrison said Wednesday night that the school has granted requested releases for both players.

The State Bureau of Investigation is busy in Newton this week as authorities probe separate incidents involving a methamphetamine lab and the suicide of a prisoner at the Catawba County jail.

Newton police say investigators received information that led them to a meth operation late Tuesday night at a home on East 26th Street in the north part of the city.
