Woman shoots, sets fire to husband

Authorities say a woman shot her husband and set him on fire at their home north of the St. Stephens community.

Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid said Tina Canipe Barbour, 47, was charged with murder, first-degree arson and destroy remains conceal death following her release from a local hospital. She was treated for smoke inhalation from the fire.

Grasshoppers top Crawdads in game two, 7-3

Despite a two-RBI performance from center fielder Jordan Akins, the Hickory Crawdads dropped their second-straight road contest to the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Thursday, 7-3.

First baseman Aaron Seene led the 'Hoppers (18-8), going 1-for-3 from the plate with a home run in the bottom of the eighth inning that plated two runs.

Catawba County crime, May 3

The Catawba County Sheriff's Office reported the following arrests and incidents this week.

Arrests
* Anthony Chad Shalk, 19, of Hickory, was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and drug violations. He was held in the Catawba County Detention Center on a $1,500 secured bond.

Catawba plans to fix financial balance

The town of Catawba cannot afford to budget as it has in recent years, the town’s manager said Thursday.  

The town, which has seen its revenues fall, then stall, in the midst of a recession, has relied on its fund balance — or town savings — to help balance the budget since the mid-2000s.

CHARLOTTE — Two people familiar with the situation say Charlotte is leaving the Atlantic 10 and rejoining Conference USA in the 2013-14 season.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because an announcement has not yet been made. The university has scheduled a Friday news conference.

BREAKING: Parochial schools to remain in NCHSAA

A vote to remove non-boarding parochial schools from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association has failed.

The NCHSAA sent a ballot to its 390 schools last month allowing principals to vote on changing a rule that allows Charlotte Catholic, Kernersville McGuinness and Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons to be members in the organization.

Seven protesters arrested near Sherrills Ford

Seven Greenpeace protesters were arrested near Sherrills Ford on Thursday morning after chaining themselves to railroad tracks to show opposition to Duke Energy and Apple Inc.

Railroad technicians had to halt a train heading for the Marshall Steam Station in Terrell after the protesters bolted themselves to the tracks with steel tubes and branded railroad cars with the iconic Apple logo.
