Hickory earns top seeds in CV Classic pairings

The pairings for this year’s Catawba Valley Classic were released Monday.

The opening round for the tournament starts on Tuesday, Dec. 27.

The boys’ slate of games will be played at Hickory High School, while the girls games will be at the Tarlton Complex, formerly the Multi-Purpose Center, at Catawba Valley Community College.

Hickory, the defending boys champion, is seeded No. 1 and will take on Bunker Hill at 6 p.m.

Panthers Chudzinski's playbook has no limits

CHARLOTTE — Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski has a bag full of tricks and he's not afraid to use them — even if it means borrowing a play from a kids' movie.

With Cam Newton under center, Chudzinski is finding fun news ways to use the talented rookie's athleticism to his advantage.

Elizabeth Martha Wykes, of Newton, died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, at Conover Nursing and Rehabilitation.  A memorial service will be on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Newton.

Noah Emanuel Dellinger Jr., 56, of Conover, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011 at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory.  Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Dellinger family.

Car flips, hits house in Newton

Cynthia Travis was enjoying time with her daughter on Monday when what felt like an earthquake rattled her home.

“We heard a really big crash and the house was shaking,” Travis said. “I thought we were in a real earthquake this time.”

Travis was in no earthquake, though. A 2005 Chevrolet Corvette had struck her home.

“I looked outside and there was nothing but horror,” she said.

Two men, whose names were not released, were hospitalized with serious injuries on Monday after their car went airborne and hit Travis’ home at 909 Laffon Road in Newton.

Crash kills Maiden woman

The N.C. Highway Patrol believes alcohol was a factor in a Sunday crash that killed a Maiden woman on N.C. 16 South.

Thelma Jean Chappell, 47, of Maiden, died when the 1999 Ford Explorer she was riding in veered into the median on N.C. 16 and overturned in the area of N.C. 150, said K.E. Travis, a trooper with the highway patrol.

Thomas Ray Klutz, 42, of Conover, was driving the vehicle. Travis said he charged Klutz with driving while impaired and reckless driving.

Other charges may be filed, pending blood results, Travis said.

Longtime Midstate Mills leader dies

A longtime leader of Newton-based Midstate Mills Inc. died suddenly Saturday.

Boyd Hawn Drum served Midstate Mills as president and chairman of the board of directors from the early 1980s until 2007, said Steve Arndt, the company's vice president and chief marketing officer. Drum was 77.

Drum's father, G.D., founded the company that became Midstate Mills in Maiden in 1935. The company moved to Newton in 1961.

Drum's son, Robert, currently serves as Midstate Mills' corporate president and chairman of the board of directors.

Hickory officer shoots man who flees traffic stop

North Carolina investigators are looking into why a Hickory police officer critically wounded a man fleeing an attempted traffic stop.

The Hickory Police Department says Master Police Officer Bruce Bumgarner tried to stop a vehicle late Saturday.

Officers say 36-year-old Irecas Valentine of Hickory sped away, wrecked his sports utility vehicle and threatened when he was cornered by Bumgarner. Valentine was shot and taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem in critical condition.

Newton, Panthers end Texans' win streak at seven

HOUSTON (AP) — Cam Newton threw two touchdown passes, DeAngelo Williams ran for a score and the Carolina Panthers ended Houston's seven-game winning streak with a 28-13 win over the Texans on Sunday.

Newton completed 13 of 23 passes for 149 yards, outplaying opposing rookie quarterback T.J. Yates. The Panthers (5-9) built a 21-0 halftime lead, then ended Houston's second-half rally when linebacker James Anderson intercepted Yates in the end zone midway through the fourth quarter.

Former Hickory kicker Succop's 4 FGs help Chiefs upset Packers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers' perfect season came to a crashing halt on Sunday against the beleaguered Kansas City Chiefs, who rallied behind interim coach Romeo Crennel and new quarterback Kyle Orton to a shocking 19-14 victory.

Orton finished 23 of 31 for 299 yards in his first start for the Chiefs (6-8), who fired coach Todd Haley last Monday with the team having lost five of its last six games. The loss also ended the Packers' 19-game winning streak.

Foard wins Tiger Land, Bandys comes in third

Fred T. Foard won its host Tiger Land individual tournament on Saturday. The Tigers scored 233.5 points, easily edging second place Lake Norman, who scored 169 points in the events.

Bandys finished in third place with 117 points, narrowly surpassing the 116 points of Alexander Central.

Thirteen of 14 Tiger wrestlers finished in the top 4 of each weight division, including champions Ben Pitts (132), Ben Hughes (152), Trevor Cook (160), Hayden Albert (170) and Zack Edwards (195).

Caleb Griffin also finished in a runner-up in his weight class.
