Mayors and other government officials throughout Catawba County are banding together to spread the word about preventing child abuse, an issue that has become more important than ever in recent years.

Story third in AP's girls hoops player vote

Bandys guard Madi Story finished third in the voting for the Associated Press girls prep basketball player of the year.

The voting results were released on Saturday with Story, the Catawba Valley 2A player of the year, receiving two of a possible 22 votes.

Bandys beats Bunker Hill for seventh-straight win

Adding some late insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings, the Bandys softball team continued its winning streak Friday.

Scarlett Harris, Jessica Younger, Tiffany Holland and Ayla Acosta each drove in a run, leading the Lady Trojans to a 4-1 conference victory at home over Bunker Hill (5-3, 4-2).

PREP NOTEBOOK: Wilkerson's 20 Ks best Indians

Chelsea Wilkerson struck out 20 St. Stephens batters and allowed one hit, leading the Lady Cougars to the 2-0 victory in conference play.

Lady Indians first basemen Darian Fisher broke up a perfect game by Wilkerson in the sixth inning with a single.

St. Stephens falls to 8-6 overall and 4-3 in the Northwestern conference.

While the specifics are still being negotiated, the family has taken over the reins of the old theater — cleaning up, fixing up and preparing the old cinema for a new era of local screening that will begin this weekend.

Panthers deal RB Goodson for Raiders' OT Campbell

CHARLOTTE — The Panthers announced they've traded running back Mike Goodson to the Oakland Raiders in exchange for offensive tackle Bruce Campbell.

Goodson, who ran for 501 yards and three touchdowns in three seasons with Carolina, became expendable after the team signed free agent running back Mike Tolbert earlier this offseason.

Thelma Louise Wilkinson Jones, of Catawba, died Thursday, March 29, 2012, four days prior to her 91st birthday, at Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley after a brief illness, but a longer period of generally declining health.  The Jones family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home and Cremations in Conover.
