Hardy, Wilson join Bazzle's coaching staff at A-C

Two Newton-Conover assistant coaches have left the school to take positions under former Red Devils coach Nick Bazzle at Alexander Central.

Matt Wilson and Greg Hardy have left their posts with the Red Devils to join Bazzle's staff with the Cougars.

Newton-Conover coach Brint Russell said Wilson's decision to leave was a difficult one.

Willa Glenn Caldwell, 85, of Maiden, passed away on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.  The Caldwell family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home and Cremtations of Conover.

Pedestrian hit

A woman was hit by a car as she tried to direct him into the bay of a garage Wednesday afternoon.

Newton Police Maj. Kevin Yarborough said the accident happened when James Fish, of Catawba, was pulling his 1997 Buick into a bay at the Speed Lube on East D Street just before 12:30  p.m.

After "experimenting" with live and archived video feeds of Conover City Council meetings, the city's leaders have pulled the plug on Internet cameras shedding light on the city's monthly business.

DA: New law protects property owners

A new North Carolina law helps protect property owners from thieves trying to turn stolen scrap metal into profit.

Beginning Oct. 1, the "Metal Theft Protection Act of 2012" sets new requirements for scrap metal dealers, including:

• Scrap metal dealers must pay by check if the scrap metal purchase exceeds $100.

Newton to spend $56K for 1500 feet of street

Maiden High School Principal Dwayne Finger has set the timetable to hire a new boys basketball coach.

He said he hopes that task will be accomplished by as early as next week.

Bobcats withdraw qualifying offer to Augustin

CHARLOTTE — The Bobcats have announced they've rescinded their qualifying offer to point guard D.J. Augustin.

That means Augustin, Charlotte's starting point guard last year when not injured, immediately becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Hornets prepare to kick of 33rd season Saturday

Back for a 33rd consecutive season, the Catawba County Hornets semi-pro football team kicks off its season on Saturday.

The Hornets, who finished 8-9 overall and 6-5 in the Central Carolinas Football League in 2011, face the Winston-Salem Red Wolves at Westside/Jaycee Park at 7 p.m. Saturday.
