Teen girls charged in cab driver murder

March 25, 2012

Two 16-year-old girls face murder and other charges in relation to the 2011 death of a Hickory cab driver.

Emily Starnes, of Hickory, and Consandra Tyree, of Newton, were arrested Saturday and charged with murder and robbery.

The girls join three men between 18 and 22 years old charged in the death of cabdriver Adam Williams in Hickory last summer.

Starnes and Tyree are in the Catawba County jail.

Community support events abound this week in Catawba County.

Events include fundraisers for a variety of organizations and residents.

On Saturday and Sunday, several organizations will sponsor Easter egg hunts.

Doug Miller steps down as Blue Devils’ coach

Doug Miller resigned Friday as the Maiden boys basketball coach.

Miller, who spent four seasons as Blue Devils coach, went 19-75 during his tenure, including a 9-15 record and a playoff appearance this season.

“When the season was over, stepping down was something my wife and I talked about,” Miller said. “I wanted to give it a month or two to see where I wanted to go with it, but I didn’t want to leave the school hanging. I didn’t want to drop off in the summer and have them scrambling for a coach.”

Bunker Hill 10, Newton-Conover 3

The Lady Bears won a conference road game against the Lady Red Devils in Newton on Friday.

Courtney Adsit and Desirae Bebber both drove in two RBIs each to lead Bunker Hill, who improves to 3-1 in conference play.

Cierra Jones had two hits for the Lady Red Devils, who fall to 0-3 in the CVAC.

Kadi O'Shell pitched seven innings, allowing three runs and two walks, while striking out 10 Newton-Conover batters. N-C's Catherine Jones suffered the loss.

Duke expects Austin Rivers' NBA decision next week

DURHAM — Duke expects freshman guard Austin Rivers to decide next week whether he will enter the NBA draft.

Team spokesman Matt Plizga said Friday that Rivers will discuss his future plans with his family this weekend, and an announcement on his future is expected next week.

The son of Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers averaged a team-leading 15.5 points and was a unanimous selection as the ACC's rookie of the year.

Shelva Jean Beard Spencer, 75, of Catawba, died Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Fla.  Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Spencer family.

Hemeter “Bud” Harding Sigmon, 91, of Conover, died peacefully Thursday, March 22, 2012, at Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba County.  The Sigmon family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Conover.

Pottery show grows

Over the past 15 years, the Catawba Valley Pottery and Antiques Festival has turned into quite a show.

Vendors and visitors alike say it’s a “big deal” — one that drew out dozens of ticketholders nearly 10 hours before the doors to the Hickory Metro Convention Center opened Friday night.

Dr. Allen Huffman, the festival’s founder and director, said at least eight people waited in camper chairs for entry to the 7 p.m. gala show when he arrived early Friday morning.

“Everyone wants to get in, find their favorite potter and get it before anyone else does,” Huffman said.

Primary voting dates announced

Absentee voting for the May primary election is in full swing, and the deadline to register to vote is quickly approaching.

Citizens have until April 13 at 5 p.m. to register to vote in the May 8 primary election.

The absentee voting process for the primary began March 9, and the last day to issue or mail absentee applications is May 1, according to dates released by the Catawba County Board of Elections.

Community offers Saintly support

The St. Stephens community will support three high school students with cancer at a fundraising event, "Saint Strong," on March 31.

Three seniors — Evan Ford, Courtney Cook and Brandon Grant — are battling cancer.

Interstate closures to begin

March 23, 2012

Beginning Sunday, a Conover section of Interstate 40 East will close each night during replacement of an overpass.

The N.C. Department of Transportation will close I-40 from exits 130-132 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly as crews replace the N.C. 16 Business bridge over the interstate.

During the interstate closures, drivers will detour onto U.S. 70 to Rock Barn Road and back to I-40.

Closures are expected to continue until April 5.

The $3.1 million bridge replacement project is expected to be completed by Nov. 15.
