Jayvee football season continued on Thursday with four match-ups featuring Catawba County football squads.

Five Catawba County football squads were all in action Thursday night.

Below are scores from the county, as well as ones in the surrounding areas.

Panthers comeback versus Steelers falls short, 17-16

A 50-yard field goal attempt by Justin Medlock with 32 seconds left sailed wide left, enabling the Pittsburgh Steelers to hold on for the 17-16 victory over the Carolina Panthers in both team's preseason finales on Thursday.

Quarterback Charlie Batch led Pittsburgh (3-1), throwing for 102 yards, including a 37-yard first-quarter touchdown to Emmanuel Sanders.

Xiong, Hernandez pace Bears in route of Ironmen

After beating Cherryville 4-1 earlier this season, the Bunker Hill soccer team was even more impressive in its second outing against the Ironmen.

Paced by a three-goal performance from freshman Richard Xiong, the Bears blanked Cherryville 7-0 in Claremont on Wednesday.

Ruth Barber Voorhees, 81, of Hickory, passed away Aug. 28, 2012 at Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley in Newton.  The Voorhees family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Hickory.

On the first morning of the Hickory American Legion fair, while tents are still being set up, Lucille Johnson and Joyce Peeler had a tall order: judge the baked goods–all them. One display with more than 50 entries and two judges. The containers didn’t matter, nor the process, the determining factor was taste.

Missing man still a mystery

After two weeks of searching, Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid met with a missing man’s family Wednesday. Ken Mohler was last seen Aug. 16 at his job at Gregory Wood Products.

“I know the family wants answers, but as of right now we have nothing,” Reid said.

BREAKING: 'Dads, Rangers reach two-year extension

The Hickory Crawdads announced on Wednesday that their partnership with the Texas Rangers has been extended.

The 'Dads and Rangers came to an agreement that will extend their Player Development Contract through the end of the 2014 season.

The Crawdads have been affiliated with the Texas Rangers since the 2009 campaign.

Focus turns to third-grade reading skills

North Carolina law changes effect 2013-2014 school year, Catawba County Schools third grade promotion and prompt the county to get new testing equipment to better child reading assessments.
