Lady Red Devils fall to Polk County in first round

Committing 22 turnovers and giving up a flurry of offensive rebounds, the Newton-Conover girls basketball team’s season came to an end Tuesday in the first round of the 2A playoffs.

The Lady Red Devils fell to visiting Polk County, 56-40, in Lemon Gym — ending their season with a 12-12 overall record.

Hope claims title

Newton-Conover’s Ah’Ron Hope won a state title at 285 pounds on Saturday in Greensboro during the NCHSAA Individual State Wrestling tournament. The Red Devils also finished as team state runners up. For more, see Sports on Page 8 of the Tuesday Edition.

Child hit by car while waiting on school bus

February 23, 2015

On Monday morning, an 8-year-old male was struck by a car while waiting to catch the school bus, according to a release from Maiden Police.

At 6:59 a.m., police and emergency personnel responded to a call that a child had been struck by a vehicle in the 500 block of East Main Street in downtown Maiden.

Sheriff: Claremont homeowner shoots, kills intruder

A man was shot and killed after he attempted to break into a home at 7564 River Bend Road just north of Claremont Monday morning, Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid said.

According to Reid, the homeowner heard someone in his basement around 9:25 a.m. The homeowner was on the phone with 911 to advise of a possible break-in when he heard the basement door being kicked in.

Auburn (12-15) 75

Kentucky played host to SEC league door matt Auburn and appropriately blew them out of the gym. Kentucky used a 23-2 run in the first half to break open a 27 point first half lead. They never looked back as Auburn never seriously threatened again. Karl Anthony Towns led Kentucky with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
