On Sunday, October 26, 2014, Dezaree Ratchford Kale, age 89, woke up in Heaven. Drum Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Conover, NC is honored to serve the Kale family.
Richard Everett Gavin Sr. 68 of Maiden passed away Thursday, October 23, 2014 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. The Gavin family is in the care of Bennett Funeral Service of Conover, 828-465-2111.
Downtown Newton was filled with ghost and goblins Saturday evening for the Newton Halloween Spooktacular. Kids of all ages were treated to games and goodies as they trunk-or-treated and also had a costume contest.

Dr. Bob Hart (bottom center) was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award Saturday during the Hart Square Festival. Dr. Hart is pictured with the Hart family-- son Eric Hart and his wife Margaret hart and their three kids, Robert, Abby and Rebecca Hart. Other son is Keith Hart and his wife Lisa Hart. Curtis Dean White, 68, of Newton, NC went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice of Newton. The White family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover.

Members of Cargo Transporters in Claremont received a special surprise on Friday afternoon when a young man in uniform showed up at the companyâs door.
âWe had no idea he was coming,â said Shawn Brown, vice president of safety for the company. âHe was just a local boy who felt moved and compelled to present us with this special flag.â
âThe last few weeks have been the most challenging I have experienced as your Mayor,â said Shawn Brown, mayor of Claremont as he opened up Thursdayâs special called city council meeting. âHowever, I do truly believe adversity and challenging situations make us better leaders.â
The agenda for the meeting listed only one item of business â a fire department discussion.

Bunker Hill High School has set its game time for Tuesday's 2A West Region volleyball final in Claremont.
The Lady Bears (21-6) welcome Hendersonville (25-2) for a 6 p.m. match on Tuesday with a chance for both teams to reach the state championship game.
