William Stanley Fowler, 52, of Connelly Springs, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658

Phyllis Janette Walling Garrison, age 83, of Lincolnton, died on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Braille is a form of writing used by blind and visually impaired people that enables them to write through touch and requires special typewriters.

Scotty Ray Shook, age 50, of Claremont, died on Feb. 18, 2014 at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Feb, 23, 2014 at 4 p.m. in the Chapel of Drum Funeral Home in Conover with Rev. Howard Stroup officiating.

Newton Fire Department does more than save lives

A cheerful breakfast around the table with a close group of friends can get serious very quickly at the Newton Fire Department. The eggs and bacon have to be put on hold at the sound of the siren.

“We come in, we pick at one another and we have a good time, but when the pager goes off, everything changes,” said Captain Jackie Lail. “It’s time to put our game face on.”

Behind Connor’s big night, Red Devils in SD-7 finals

Behind a stout performance both offensively and defensively, the Newton-Conover boys basketball team marched its way into the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A championship game.

The Red Devils led Bunker Hill by 14 points after the first quarter and coasted to a 76-40 victory against the Bears in the conference tournament semifinals Wednesday at CVCC’s Tarlton Complex.
