Vikings end Red Devils run in 2A soccer playoffs

The Newton-Conover girls soccer team had its season ended by South Iredell on Saturday evening in Troutman.

The Lady Vikings (21-2) scored three goals and clamped up their defense to come away with the 3-0 shutout in the third meeting between the two schools this season.

Miracle Campbell netted two goals for South Iredell, while Katie Hinerman pocketed the other goal for the Lady Vikings.

Johnson tries to set record with fourth All-Star win

Jimmie Johnson enters this weekend’s Sprint All-Star Race with not only the points lead, but a chance to make history.

The driver of the No. 48 Hendrick Chevrolet will try to win his record fourth All-Star trophy, and in the process, surpass Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon and the late Dale Earnhardt for most victories at the event.

Panthers end Tigers' run in the 3A baseball playoffs

Patton put an end to the improbable run in the 3A playoffs by the Fred T. Foard baseball team on Friday.

The Panthers (16-9) scored two runs in the first and fifth innings on their way to a 6-1 victory against the Tigers in Newton.

County track and field athletes finish high at 2A meet

Catawba County track and field athletes in the 2A ranks competed on Friday at North Carolina A&T for a chance to win a state championship.

Newton-Conover’s Zariyah Moss competed in the most girls track and field events with four.

Moss placed seventh in the 100-meter dash, 10th in the 200-meter dash and fifth in the long jump.

Alice “Pauline” Shook Chandler, 72, of Claremont passed away Friday, May 17, 2013 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Chandler family.

Jenkins Funeral Home, 4081 Startown Road, celebrated on Thursday the opening of its new pavilion with a ribbon cutting ceremony with the city of Newton and Catawba County Chamber of Commerce.

Tigers playoff success comes despite difficult season

Fred T. Foard’s baseball season in 2013 has been anything, but easy.

Despite their struggles, the Tigers are in the third round of the 3A playoffs tonight and aiming to continue their postseason run.

Lady Indians softball season ended in extras by Enka

The St. Stephens softball team fell in nine innings on Thursday, losing 4-3 to Enka in the third round of the 3A softball playoffs.

A sacrifice fly by Enka’s Addison Harris with one out in the ninth inning plated the winning run.

Pitcher Katie Baker had no walks and struck out 18 batters in her final game for the Lady Indians (16-8).
