Jimmy Roscoe Scott, 78, of Conover passed away on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 3:00 to 3:45 p.m. at Drum Funeral Home.

Pedal Shack comes to Newton

The city of Newton has a new home for its bicycle needs.

The Pedal Shack opened their doors in downtown Newton on June 2. The shop sells different types of bikes such as mountain, racing and utility. The name brands that owner Steve Fish carries are Felt, GT and Schwinn. The shop also sells apparel and parts for bikes. They also repair bikes.

The Newton City Council held a budget workshop to discuss any changes they want for the 2014-15 fiscal year budget.

With all of its roster, Hickory battles Cherryville

With a complete roster of players, Hickory Post 48 went to battle on Tuesday night against rival Cherryville at Henkel-Alley Field at the American Legion Fairgrounds.

Fresh off their 2A title series appearance, Bunker Hill players Colton Chapman, Cameron Chapman and Jordan Eckard all started in the contest.

Sheriff and sons working together

Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid runs a tight ship in his office. If you're family, it's a little tighter.

"I'm one of those dads that expect more out of their sons than they do anybody else," Reid said. "I'm a little harder on them, but I try not to get too involved in anything job related with them."

Reid has three sons and they each chose to follow his footsteps into law enforcement.

Man drowns at Murray’s Mill

Richard Cain, of Charlotte and Richard Black, of Statesville, were fishing at Murray's Mill on Sunday when their boat capsized in the water.

Black made it shore, but Cain never surfaced.

Maiden Robbery Suspect Arrested

On Monday June 2 2014 at 11:27 AM, the TAS Drug located at 201 Island Ford Road in Maiden was robbed by a then unknown male subject.

He presented a threatening note to pharmacy staff declaring he had a gun and demanding pharmacy staff give him certain specific controlled substance medication.
