Visitors to Murray’s Mill cooled off with free ice cream by Udderly Delicious during Sunday’s ice cream social. Event-goers were treated to bluegrass music, a duck race and tours of the mill.

Hornets add depth at guard, sign Brian Roberts

Brian Roberts started his NBA career in 2012 as a New Orleans Hornet.

The 6-foot-1 guard agreed to a two-year, $5.5 million deal on Sunday to continue playing in the NBA — this time as a member of the Charlotte Hornets.

Undrafted after coming out of the University of Dayton in 2008, Roberts spent the 2008-09 season playing basketball for club Galil Gilboa in Israel.

Hornets sign former Tar Heel forward Marvin Williams

After coming up short in the chase for Utah guard Gordon Hayward, the Charlotte Hornets have settled on another Jazz product.

Forward Marvin Williams has signed a two-year, $14 million deal with the Hornets, according to sources. All of Williams’ contract is guaranteed with no options — team or player.

LAS VEGAS — Facing the defending Summer League champions was no easy task for the Charlotte Hornets on Friday.

The Golden State Warriors took a 11-0 advantage early in the contest and led wire-to-wire in a 70-58 victory against the Hornets at the Thomas and Mack Center.

Hickory Post 48’s season was ended on Friday at the hands of Asheville Post 70.

After winning two of the first three games in the series, Asheville took an early lead in game No. 4 on Friday at Henkel-Alley Field and never looked back on its way to a 5-4 victory.

Voter turnout on the rise

3,482 voters had participated in early voting as of Friday afternoon, according to the Catawba County Board of Elections. Director Amanda Duncan expected polls surpass 3,500 votes by the end of the day, nearly triple the usual turnout for a runoff election.
