Sheriff Coy Reid recently spoke in front of the Catawba County Board of Commissioners in regards to the possible hiring of his son Jason Reid.
North Carolina General Statute requires that the board approve the appointment of any officer who is related to the sheriff.

Honoring ‘an all-around good person’

Sherrills Ford-Terrell Rotary President-Elect Bill Sondervan choked back tears on Wednesday as he talked about his fondest memories of his good friend and fellow Rotarian Ed Maddox.

“There’s a lot of good things to say about Ed,” Sondervan said. “He showed us around and truly made us feel welcome when we moved here. He’s been there for us constantly ever since.”

No fuel for you

Beams and sheet metal were scattered throughout the parking lot on Thursday at The Corner Food of Newton, located at 112 E. D St., as the grocery store removes its fuel pumps and shelter from the pumping area.
According to workers on the scene, the pump removal will be permanent and the store has no intentions on selling fuel in the future.

For the third-straight year, Bandys High School helds its annual “Hoopin’ for a Cure” student versus faculty charity basketball game,raising $1,150 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

Two teens suffer burns during youth group project in Conover

April 3, 2015

Two teenagers were airlifted to Wake Forest Burn Center in Winston-Salem after a Sterno heater exploded during a youth group project on Wednesday.

The teens, who have not been identified, were working with other youth at The Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter-Day Saints, located at 502 Thornburg Drive NE in Conover, and supervised by adults when the incident occurred around 7:45 p.m.

Chelsea Renee Scully, 22, of Holly Springs Drive in Newton was arrested by the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office on Friday.
