Schools donate to HSCC

Collin Barrett’s class at University Christian High School organized an Angel Tree to benefit the Humane Society of Catawba County. Students from the class dropped off food, blankets and a stack of gift cards for any future urgent needs to the shelters on the Friday before Christmas.

Pool together: Cherkez sisters anchor Lady Indians

On a St. Stephens swim team with several family ties, the Cherkez sisters help to provide a rock solid anchor.

Polina and Sophia Cherkez are hoping to lead the Lady Indians program to new heights this winter season.

The Cherkez (pronounced CHUR-KEZ) sisters started swimming when they were ages 4 (Polina) and 5 (Sophia) for the YMCA Seahorse Swim Team (YSST).

Ramseur, Fleming soak up Shrine Bowl experience

Following a week-long journey in Spartanburg, S.C., Josh Ramseur and Tyrell Fleming returned to Catawba County on Sunday.

The Newton-Conover football players are coming off an appearance in the 78th edition of the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas all-star game.

Maiden Police provides meals

Maiden Police Department launched their R U OK program this year as a way to better serve the elderly population of the community.

Lt. Donna Hartman is heading up the program and worked to expand it for the holiday season, delivering meals to the 22 clients the program serves.

Catawba County searches for felon

At approximately 4:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, a manhunt broke out in the Maiden area.

The hunt began with a car chase that lasted about 10 minutes that started when Catawba County authorities spotted Jeffery Tucker driving through Maiden.
