About 400 people turned out to the Burke County Courthouse on New Year’s Day to watch as newly elected District Attorney David Learner took his oath of office.

Panther defense dominant in 1st playoff win since '06

The Carolina Panthers unleashed 10 long years of frustration on Saturday against visiting Arizona.

Holding the Cardinals to an NFL playoff record-low 78 yards of total offense, the Panthers moved on to the NFC Divisional playoff round with a 27-16 win.

It’s the first playoff win for the Panthers franchise since Jan. 15, 2006.

Vehicle stop leads to drug arrest

A man was arrested for possession of Marijuana during a vehicle stop on Shady Lane in Newton on Thursday.

The vehicle was observed running a stop sign at the intersection of Baringer Circle which initiated the stop, according to Major Tim Hayes. The officer noticed the occupants acting suspicious and contacted a K9 unit that was nearby.

Boyfriend charged with murder of infant

An infant has died and a man has been charged with murder after an incident in Newton on New Year’s Eve.

At approximately 7:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Newton Police responded to Sandalwood Court to assist EMS.
