BREAKING: Bandys forfeits three baseball victories

Bandys High School has forfeited its three varsity baseball victories from this season due to the use of an ineligible player.

The Trojans self reported the violations to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA), surrendering wins on March 2 and March 11 against South Iredell and March 4 against Shelby.

Newton man, woman arrested for drug charges

March 30, 2015

Quantez Antontio Gaither, of McKay Road in Newton, was arrested on Wednesday by the Hickory Police Department. Gaither was charged with trafficking in opium or heroin, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, possession with intent to sell and distribute marijuana and felony possession of marijuana. Gaither is currently being held at the Catawba County Detention Center under a $60,000 bond.

N-CHS students earns Park Scholarship

Abby Cox, 17, of Conover is excited to begin her next chapter after she graduates from Newton-Conover High School (N-CHS) in June. Her most recent achievement has left her even more excited to begin her college career.

Cox was chosen as one of only 40 total recipients of The Park Scholarship at North Carolina State University.

New headquarters nears completion in downtown

On Feb. 14 last year, the new Newton Fire Department headquarters began taking shape.

After roughly 10 months of construction, the finishing touches are being added on and the department is prepping for open.

Finding your passion

"I'm so so fortunate to be in Conover," said City of Conover Planning Director Lance Hight. "Working in a place like this has allowed me and my department to do so well."

Hight began working for the City of Conover is 2004, just after graduating from Western Kentucky University with a Bachelor's Degree in City and Regional Planning.

‘Just a mom’ making a difference

Laurie Powell squealed with excitement when she read that Senate Bill 445 and House Bill 355 had passed their first reading on Thursday. The companion bills were filed on Wednesday after Powell spent a year advocating for “Burt’s Law” in response to a tragic incident that involved the abuse of her son, Burt.
