Girls basketball coach Brad Mangum is leaving Fred T. Foard for a former rival high school of the Tigers.
Mangum was approved as a high school teacher on Monday by the Alexander County School Board and also named the next girls basketball coach at ACHS.
Mangum said there was one main reason for his decision to make the coaching move.
Newton along with the Hickory and Conover police departments and N.C. Highway Patrol wrote a combined 59 tickets and made several arrests during a weekend checkpoint.
The group of 17 officers conducted the checkpoint Saturday, June 15 at 11 p.m. that lasted until 2 a.m Sunday. The checkpoint was located on U.S. 70 near the Hickory American Legion Fair Grounds.

Forty-five years after helping N.C. State make it to the College World Series for the first time in program history, Newton natives and former Wolfpack baseball players Dennis Punch and Gary Yount reflected on their team's remarkable run to Omaha.
Punch and Yount were two of three Red Devils who played in back-to-back College World Series in 1967-68.
Madison Bumgarner was magic on the mound Friday in Georgia in front of 40 of his closest family and friends.
The former South Caldwell High and current San Francisco Giants pitcher tossed a two-hit gem in a 6-0 victory against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field.
Bumgarner spoke after Friday's game that he knew "after the first out" of his potential perfect game and no-hit performances.
Despite having nearly a week off from competition, Hickory Post 48 picked up where it left off on Friday.
A six-run top of the fourth lifted Hickory to a Area IV West Division victory against Asheville.
Post 48 improves to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in divisional games.

A fast moving powerful storm struck Conover Thursday afternoon and left a trail of damage across the city.
“As of noon today [Friday] we have collected more than 50 tons of debris since clean up efforts began yesterday,” Conover City Manager Donald Duncan said.
