New Red Devils coach focused on the ‘full scope’

Looking at the reaction of his 5-year-old son, Matt Beam knew he was destined to be the head football coach at Newton-Conover HIgh School.

"My son, Davis, went through his room dressed up in all red saying 'alright dad, I'm ready to go,’” Beam said. “I really knew then if my family would be alright with it, I would be alright with it. We're excited about the opportunity.”

Trojans sweep Bears on court in a historic night

The Bandys girls basketball team did much more than maintain its first-place standing in the SD-7 with a win Tuesday night against rival Bunker Hill.

The Lady Trojans set a school record with their 44th-straight win at Bost-Matheson Gymnasium, defeating the Lady Bears, 78-19.

Red Devils, Tigers top latest wrestling poll

The latest RetroRankings.com poll was released this past week with a pair of prep wrestling teams in Catawba County being honored.

Newton-Conover and Fred T. Foard were voted at the top of the dual team polls in the 2A and 3A ranks, respectively.

Several Catawba County wrestlers are also ranked highly in their respective classifications and weight classes.

BREAKING: Boards approve Beam, Brown to coach

A couple of area high schools made their head football coaching decisions official on Monday night.

The Newton-Conover City Schools approved current Burns head coach Matt Beam to take over their high school's football program.

East Burke High School also ushered in a new era with its football team, which will led by former Bunker Hill and Maiden high school coach Tom Brown.

SOURCES: Burns' Beam is choice for Red Devils

Newton-Conover High School is expected to present a name before its school board meeting on Monday night.

That name, according to several sources, is current Burns football coach Matt Beam.

Sources also indicated that Beam, an East Lincoln and Appalachian State graduate, was in attendance for a Red Devil basketball game on Tuesday against West Lincoln.

Tyoun Shuford's last-second trey tops Mustangs

All three of the losses for the Newton-Conover boys basketball team so far this season had come down to the wire.

Only fitting that the Red Devils would catch a break on their fourth try — this time against East Lincoln.

Tyoun Shuford made a 3-pointer with 4.8 seconds left, lifting the Red Devils at home past the unbeaten Mustangs on Friday.

Lady Trojans take sole possession of first place

January 11, 2014

The Bandys girls basketball team defeated Maiden on Friday night, 67-37, to take sole possession of first place in the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A standings.
