St. Stephens' Katie Baker and Fred T. Foard's Lexi Shubert both tossed no-hitters in 3A first round playoff victories on Friday.
Baker struck out 16 batters in a 4-0 victory by the Lady Indians against West Henderson, while Shubert tallied 11 Ks in a 11-0 mercy rule win by the Lady Tigers against Forestview.

John Tate and Tyler Barrymore will try to give Newton-Conover High School its fourth-straight doubles tennis title when they compete this Friday and Saturday in Cary at the 2A Individual Tennis State Championships.
Two years ago, N-C’s Will Huggins and Hang Lak Choi came away with a 2A doubles tennis titles.
Behind two goals each from Chaniece Moss and Kara Schell, the Newton-Conover girls soccer team earned a 6-0 victory against Madison on Thursday.
The win by the Lady Red Devil is their 11th in a row.
Newton-Conover (19-1-1) advances to Saturday’s 2A second round, where they will travel to East Lincoln (12-9-2) for a 7 p.m. game.

Hickory Crawdads pitcher C.J. Edwards was named the Texas Rangers minor league pitcher of the month on Thursday.
The 21-year-old Edwards is 1-1 on the mound this month with a 1.93 ERA (five earned runs in 23.1 innings).
He has struck out 29 batters and allowed just seven walks, holding opposing batters to a .176 average.

The St. Stephens girls soccer team made an emphatic statement to open their 3A playoff appearance on Wednesday.
The Lady Indians (17-3-2) scored seven goals, including two each from Macy Franklin and Olivia Holmes, on their way to a 7-0 shutout against Forestview.

Hunter Harvey’s biggest contribution to the Bandys baseball team typically comes when he is pitching on the mound.
Tuesday night, it was Harvey’s presence at the plate that made all the difference.
The senior second baseman drove in seven runs, helping the Trojans defeat Draughn 15-5 in five innings to claim the CVAC tournament title.
