N-CHS grad has Red Hawks back in national spotlight

Taking over the Catawba Valley Community College women’s basketball program from retiring head coach Tommy Edwards in 2013, Tisha England had some big shoes to fill.

Now, the Newton-Conover High alumni has the Lady Red Hawks soaring high on the court and hopes to take them to new heights before season’s end.

Knowing it would be the final game for teammate Josh Ramseur, Alex Johnson put in the extra work in practice this week in preparation for West Caldwell.

Johnson’s work ethic showed on Friday, and the junior scored 26 points in a 85-77 victory for Newton-Conover against the Warriors at Lemon Gym.

A journey that started in Orlando, Fla. for Austin Gorman has continued through Western North Carolina.

The St. Stephens sophomore is making a big splash in his first-ever prep swimming season, helping fill in some important gaps for the Indians this winter.

Bandys freshman inspiring teammates, opponents

With injuries to key starters and returning players, Jason Barnes knew he’d have his hands full entering his first season as head coach of the Bandys boys basketball program.

Through the difficulty of winning games and being competitive, one Trojan junior varsity basketball player has helped to give his teammates, coaches, community and even opponents a different outlook on life.

Saint boys, Hickory girls win county swimming titles

January 20, 2015

Through four years of the event, one high school had always taken home both the boys and girls titles at the Catawba County Swimming Championships.

That tradition ended on Tuesday when the St. Stephens High School boys and the Hickory High School girls each took home their respective trophies during the fifth annual meet held at the Hickory Foundation YMCA.
