Trojans seek another CVAC title

While basketball season continues at Bandys High School, softball season is just around the corner.

The Lady Trojans softball team has tried to prepare for the early part of the season without their core players, who are members of the basketball team.

Tigers claim first boys’ state title

Fred T. Foard capped an amazing season on Saturday by capturing their first-ever state title in any boys’ sport.

Leading the charge for the Tigers was Hayden Albert, who finished as a state runner-up in the 160-pound weight class. That finish is a tie with David Bradan (2002) for the best overall finish in a state tournament in school history.

Also finishing strong were Jacob Harper and Dillon Johnson. Harper finished fourth at 145 pounds, and Johnson, who was a West Region champion at 171 pounds, finished in fifth place.

Bunker Hill building on 29-1 season

The Bunker Hill baseball team is looking to build on the momentum of last season.

The Bears were 29-1 last year and won the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships. They won 29 straight games before losing in the third round of the playoffs.

Marty Curtis returns for his 28th season as Bunker Hill baseball coach and 39th season of coaching overall. He says that last season was his best ever at the helm of a team and credits that with a unique grouping.

Lady Trojans win thriller against Eagles

Bandys stopped Wilkes Central on their final possession and senior Tara Potter grabbed the final rebound, as the Lady Trojans held on to win the Sectional championship Friday.

Wilkes Central (25-5) had possession of the ball with 30 seconds remaining in the game and trailed 66-65. The Lady Eagles ran 20 seconds off the clock before coach Scott Waugh took a timeout to set up the final play.

However, Wilkes Central missed a game-winning shot. Potter grabbed the rebound off the miss, was fouled and made 1-of-2 free throws to seal the Bandys win.

Region return: Newton-Conover wins Sectional title behind Tipps' shot, strong fourth quarter

Newton-Conover blew open a six-point halftime lead in the third quarter and scored 10 straight points in the fourth quarter, on their way to a win over East Burke.

The Lady Red Devils (24-3) defeated the Lady Cavaliers (20-9) 61-42,on Friday to advance to their second straight Western 2A Regional in Greensboro next week. Newton-Conover joins Bandys (27-3), Thomasville (23-6) and defending state champion Salisbury (24-1).

Comeback kids: Foard wrestlers try make history this week, rewrite program’s record books

Seven wrestlers at Fred T. Foard will be trying to make history beginning today at the NCHSAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament and complete the comeback of the Tiger's wrestling program.

Among those headed to Greensboro on Thursday are Caleb Griffin, Jeremy Fredell, Jacob Harper, Hayden Albert, Dillon Johnson, Zack Edwards and Cole Schanilec.

Each will have a chance to become the first-ever state wrestling champion in Fred T. Foard history.

Trojans hand Golden Lions first loss

Despite eleven 3-pointers from Shelby, the Lady Trojans knocked off the previously unbeaten Golden Lions on the road Wednesday.

Both teams were tied 34-34 at halftime. The Lady Trojans (26-3) came out sluggish in the second half. They committed four early turnovers in the third quarter after only having ten turnovers in the first half.

N-C advances to face East Burke

The Lady Red Devils advanced to the Sectional Round of the playoffs with a victory over Mountain Heritage on the road Wednesday.

Leading Newton-Conover (23-3) were four players – Kadesha Gibbs, Quazzy Tipps, Shynese Whitener and Tiana Littlejohn.

They combined to score 48 of their team’s 59 points in the game.
The Lady Red Devils rushed out to a 28-13 halftime lead with a combination of their strong defense and fast break offense.

Final preparations: Newton-Conover, Maiden wrestlers ready for 2A State Wrestling tournament

The State 2A Individual Wrestling Tournament begins today, as 21 local wrestlers from Bandys, Bunker Hill, Newton-Conover and Maiden will compete.

Last season, the entire tournament was two days in length, which caused some scheduling issues. Some tournament matches lasted until right around mid-night.

The new tournament schedule is three days in length and 2A teams start competition on Thursday instead of Friday.

Individual wrestlers from all around the Catawba County area are preparing for this week’s NCHSAA state wrestling tournament and many are working together.

On Tuesday, the state qualified wrestlers from St. Stephens and Bunker Hill spent time together in practice trying to prepare one another for the competition they will face.

Indians coach Billy Baker likes the idea of changing up the daily routine to help his wrestlers not become used to their familiar surroundings.
