Q&A with NASCAR’s Joe Gibbs, Denny Hamlin

NASCAR owner and Super Bowl winning coach Joe Gibbs and one of his three drivers, Denny Hamlin, visited Catawba County on Tuesday.
Both men played in the Dale Jarrett Shootout, which is part of the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn.
Gibbs owns three Super Bowl titles with the Washington Redskins (Super Bowls 17, 22, 26). His three Sprint Cup Series championships came with drivers Bobby LaBonte (2000) and Tony Stewart (2002, 2005).
Hamlin owns four of his 16 Sprint Cup Series victories at Pocono Raceway, where the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is racing this weekend.

Former Tiger attempts to win NCAA title

A former Fred T. Foard athlete is aiming to win an NCAA championship in the hammer throw today.

Malcolm Styers, a former member of the Tigers’ track and field program and current senior at Appalachian State, qualified for the NCAA National track and field championships with a career-best performance May 27 at the NCAA East Regionals.

High school students share Shootout experience

Celebrities, golf professionals and some of the area’s best high school golfers stole the show Tuesday as part of the Dale Jarrett Shootout at the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn presented by Kia Motors.

Among those in attendance were NASCAR owner Joe Gibbs, NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin, former Virginia Tech and Charlotte Hornets star Dell Curry and Olympic gold medalist Dan Jansen.

Each of the celebrities that played in Tuesday’s event were paired with a golf professional and one of the top-five finishers in Monday’s Greater Hickory High School Classic.

Stars trying to build future Major Leaguers

Some of college baseball’s finest players assembled in Catawba County for another season of the Catawba Valley Stars baseball team.

The Stars, which consist of college baseball players from different schools around the country, play in the Carolina Virginia Collegiate Summer Baseball League. The team has been in existence for more than 20 years.

The league consists of eight teams, and the Stars play a grueling schedule of 65 games in 75 days.

Also on the Stars’ schedule are non-league teams from the Coastal Plains League, Independent League and MLB Rookie League.

Poston fires 32, wins Classic

Hickory golfer J.T. Poston shot a 32 to win Monday’s nine-hole Greater Hickory High School Classic at Rock Barn.

Bunker Hill’s Tyler Lail finished third with a 35. Fred T. Foard’s Sterling Cline and Maiden’s Thomas Lilly finished with 37s, which were tied for the fourth best score.

Three area baseball players could be selected in MLB draft

Three of the area's best baseball players are looking forward to the coming week, as the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft commences Monday.

Bunker Hill's Jeremy Null, Hickory's Tyler Poole and Lenoir-Rhyne's Brian Dice are all potential picks in this year's draft, which is televised on the MLB Network starting Monday.

Null, a 6-foot-7-inch pitcher, stiffled offenses with a strong early 90s fastball. He used his senior season to further develop his pitching by adding breaking pitches to his repertoire.

GHC ready despite shorter time to prepare

Despite having seven months to prepare for another tournament, Rock Barn Golf & Spa is ready to host the 2011 Greater Hickory Classic presented by Kia Motors next week.

Pete Fisch, tournament manager for the Greater Hickory Classic, said the moving of the tournament date put the course in a time disadvantage.

Poole, Hoyle, Jordan guide Post 48 in win

The Hickory American Legion baseball team opened up the home portion of its 2011 season in fashion.

Post 48 (2-0) scored early, adding one run in the first and four runs in the second, on its way to a 11-2 win over Rutherford County Post 423 Wednesday.

Leading the way offensively was Stephan Jordan, who had three RBIs. Jacob Hoyle added two RBIs.

Pitcher Tyler Poole also played a great game, allowing seven hits, two runs, three walks and struck out six batters.

Bears sweep doubleheader with N-C

In a back-and-forth battle in doubleheader Junior Legion baseball, Bunker Hill got the best of Newton-Conover.

The Bears scored six runs in the final two innings of game one to earn a 9-5 victory.

They swept the doubleheader with two clutch RBIs in the bottom of the fifth inning by Nathan Gantt to win game two.

The Red Devils and Bears tied after the first inning with both squads scoring two runs each in the first frame.

Foard’s Kaylee Dowell soaring in gymnastics

At 15 years old, Kaylee Dowell has completed the triple crown of junior gymnastics.

Dowell, a freshman at Fred T. Foard, scored 37.5 points out of a possible 40 during the Level 9 Junior Olympic Eastern National Championships earlier this month in Worcester, Mass.

The competition included four events — floor exercise, balance beam, vault and uneven bars.

She adds the J.O. Eastern National title to the two championship victories in April — a North Carolina state title in Greenville and a regional title in New Orleans.
