Hickory falls to Cherryville, earn Area IV No. 2 seed

Cherryville Post 100 won a third and deciding game against Hickory Post 48 in the Area IV title series on Monday.

Hickory (20-11) is the Area IV runner-up. They will be the Area IV No. 2 seed at the North Carolina Legion State Tournament, which starts on Friday in Morehead City at 4:30 p.m.

By virtue of their title win, Cherryville (26-7) will be the No. 1 seed in Area IV at the state tournament.

Leading Post 48 in the loss was Skyler Hollar, who had a home run and one RBI.

Cameron Beard, Cole McGraw, Jacob Hoyle and Jeremy Null also had one RBI each.

Cary, Caldwell win, W. Johnston awaits winner

South Caldwell and Cary earned hard-fought wins on Monday to advance to the final day of the Junior Legion State Tournament on Tuesday at Henkel-Alley Field.

South Caldwell (3-1) and Cary (3-1) play Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the loser being eliminated.

Cary defeated South Caldwell, 8-5, in the second round of the Junior Legion tournament on Saturday.

The winner of the South Caldwell-Cary game will await West Johnston (3-1) in the second game of a Tuesday doubleheader 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

Maiden grad Sizemore working hard this summer

Most college students spend their summer free from books. Some take on summer jobs. One local product, though, is using this free time to get better on the baseball diamond.

Former Maiden and current Liberty University baseball player Justin Sizemore is playing for the Martinsville Mustangs from Martinsville, Va.

The Mustangs are a member of the Coastal Plain League (CPL), one of the best summer collegiate wood bat baseball leagues in the country.

Hickory advances to Area IV title series

Down 2-1 in the fourth inning, Hickory scored six runs in three innings on Thursday to defeat Caldwell County, 7-2, in game four of a best-of-five series.Post 48 (19-9) advances to the Area IV championship series.

Leading the way were a trio of Hickory hitters, including Jeremy Null, Jacob Hoyle and Cameron Beard. The three combined for all seven RBIs in the game.

Post 48 (19-9) struck first in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Hoyle and Null doubled on back-to-back innings to put Post 48 ahead 1-0 after one inning.

Eight-team brack set for Jr. Legion tourney

The final four spots were filled for Friday’s Junior Legion state tournament at Henkel-Alley Field at the American Legion Fairgrounds.

Qualifying for the tournament are Rowan County, Kernersville, Leland and Newport.

Rowan County will be the No. 1 team from Area III. Newport is the No. 2 team in Area III.

Leland and Kernersville are representing Area II. Leland will be the No. 1 seed in Area II and Kernersville is the No. 2 seed in Area II.

The Carolina Glove Flames, the host team for the tournament, will play Leland at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Field conditions delay playoff game to Thursday

The fourth game between Hickory Post 48 and Caldwell County Post 29 was postponed on Wednesday due to field conditions.

The two teams will play game four on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Roy Waters, commissioner for the Legion State, said that if rain caused the final two games to be delayed any further, rules state that the series would go back to a best two-out-of-three format.

Because they have won two-out-of-three games, Hickory (18-9) would advance to championship round against either Queen City (22-7) or Cherryville (23-6). Cherryville currently leads that series, 2-1.

Jr. Legion tournament starts Friday at Henkel-Alley

An eight-team American Legion Junior state tournament starts Friday at Henkel-Alley Field on the American Legion Fairgrounds.

The tournament will feature some of the best Junior Legion teams in the state. A total of 15 games between teams could be played through Tuesday.
Four teams qualified for spots in the tournament.

These include No. 1 Johnston County and No. 2 Cary from Area I, and No. 1 South Caldwell and the No. 2 Carolina Flames from Area IV. The Flames will be the host team for the tournament.

Walkoff hit gives Post 48 win in ninth

For the second time in as many days, Post 48 won in dramatic fashion on the baseball diamond.

A walkoff hit by Hickory center fielder Phillip Carroll lifted his team to a ninth inning win over Caldwell County. Hickory (18-8) leads its series over Caldwell County (19-11), 2-0.

“Phillip is a great player,” Rembert said. “From day one, he wanted that center field spot and earned it. He competes so hard every night and gives us everything he’s got. He’s a 48er.”

Harper, others give back what's been given

For the third straight year, college and NFL players gathered at Bandys High School to work with area high school football players on Friday.

Newton-Conover, Maiden, Bandys, St. Stephens and four other schools’ athletes participated in drills and took advice during the third annual Justin Harper Oddie Cares Foundation football camp.

This year’s camp had even more of special meaning to Harper after the passing last night of 9-year-old “Robbie” Caskey, a close friend of Harper’s in the Bandys community.

Harper said the young man had a special place in his life.

‘Dads shortstop Profar takes big stage Sunday

At 18 years old, Jurickson Profar is taking center stage Sunday.

The Hickory Crawdads’ shortstop is participating in the Major League Baseball Futures Game in Arizona, which is part of the league’s annual All-Star festivities.

The game pits the United States team against the World team. Teams are comprised of top minor league prospects.

Players on both of the 25-man rosters are selected by MLB, the MLB Scouting Bureau, MLB.com, Baseball America, USA Baseball and the 30 MLB teams.
