Behind Chaniece Moss’ goal on an Abby Cox assist, the Newton-Conover girls soccer team advanced to the fourth round of the 2A playoffs on Wednesday.
The Lady Red Devils defeated Owen 1-0 in Black Mountain.
Moss’ goal came at the seven-minute mark of the first half, and a stingy LRD defense held on for the one-goal shutout.
St. Stephens’ Macy Franklin scored four goals on Wednesday — all in the first half — helping the Lady Indians defeat Ashbrook 6-0 in the third round of the 3A playoffs.
Former Freedom football coach Mike Helms is the next prep football coach at Hickory High School.
Helms' hire was approved during a special session of the Hickory Public Schools Board of Education on Wednesday.

The Newton-Conover golf team made history on Tuesday at Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines, becoming the school's first squad to capture a state title in the sport.
Newton-Conover varsity girls basketball Ike Williams has accepted an assistant coaching position with the women's basketball program at Catawba Valley Community College.
Nick Schroeder, CVCC's sports information director, confirmed that Williams had accepted the position on Tuesday.

With its season on the line, the Newton-Conover boys tennis team’s hopes of reaching the 2A dual team semifinals hinged on the elbow of Tyler Barrymore.
The junior overcame his injured right arm and a pair of 3-0 deficits in set two and a third-set tiebreaker in his singles match with West Davidson’s Brett Moore.
The Newton-Conover boys golf team is in first place by eight strokes after the first day of the 2A state golf tournament at Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines.
Alex Hefner paced the Red Devils by carding a round of 70, which puts him in sole possession of the lead in the event.
N-C teammate Trey Burton wasn’t far behind, tying for second place with a round of 72.
