Indian boys, N-C girls win, Whitener scores 1,000th

December 7, 2011

After going 0-for-9 on three-pointers in the first half against Newton-Conover, the St. Stephens boys basketball found its stroke.

The Indians (4-2) made four three-pointers in the final half and held off late charge by the Red Devils, including a last-second three that banked off of the rim and out.

Drew Starkey led the Indians with 13 points, while Chris Hefner pitched in nine points.

Tyoun Shufford scored 16 points for N-C (2-2).

Rivers helps No. 7 Duke beat Colorado State, 87-64

December 7, 2011

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Duke played so many games in the first two weeks of the season that coach Mike Krzyzewski's team had relatively little time to refine itself on the practice court. The seventh-ranked Blue Devils are starting to get that chance.

Freshman guard Austin Rivers scored 17 points to help Duke beat Colorado State 87-64 on Wednesday night, a successful return from a weeklong break following a lopsided loss at Ohio State.

AP sources: Southern Miss' Fedora accepts UNC job

December 7, 2011

Two people familiar with the situation say Southern Mississippi coach Larry Fedora has accepted an offer to become North Carolina's next football coach.

They say the framework of a deal is in place, though it isn't final yet. Both people spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday on condition of anonymity because the school isn't commenting publicly on its search.

Fedora has guided the 22nd-ranked Golden Eagles to a school-record 11 wins and the Conference USA championship. Southern Miss faces Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl on Dec. 24.

Tigers sweep Bears to continue hot season starts

December 7, 2011

The Fred T. Foard boys basketball team’s resurgence continued Tuesday.

The Tigers scored 24 fourth quarter points, including eight each from Tre Robinson and Kasey Simms, carrying them past Bunker Hill at home, 54-43.

The victory improves Foard, which won three games last season, to 5-0.
The two teams were deadlocked for a majority of the contest. The Bears (0-4) held a 21-19 lead at the halftime break.

That all changed with 7:13 remaining in the game. A three-point play opportunity by Robinson gave the Tigers a lead they did not let go.

No. 4 North Carolina beats Evansville 97-48

December 7, 2011

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Denver Holmes knocked down outside shots and provided Evansville with some scoring punch against fourth-ranked North Carolina. The problem was that no one else followed his lead.

While Holmes scored 14 points in the 97-48 loss to the Tar Heels on Tuesday night, no other player reached double figures for the Purple Aces. The rest of the team struggled to knock down shots, particularly from 3-point range, that could have helped negate North Carolina's big size advantage.

Solid fourth lifts Hickory past Lady Red Devils

December 6, 2011

Trailing by two entering the fourth, Hickory powered its way to 24 points in the final quarter, lifting the Lady Red Tornadoes past Newton-Conover, 59-48.

It was about as even as it could get in the early going. Newton-Conover (2-1) and Hickory (4-0) both scored nine points in the first quarter and 16 points in the second quarter, leaving the game tied 25-25 at halftime.

A two-point cushion entering the fourth quarter gave the Lady Red Devils hope they could come away with the victory, but that all changed in the fourth.

Hickory drains 14 three-pointers in win over N-C

December 6, 2011

Hickory hit 14 three-pointers Monday against Newton-Conover, which helped propel them to a dominant 87-43 victory over the visiting Red Devils.

Jalen Byrd helped his team right out of the gate, scoring 12 of Hickory's 25 points in the first quarter — two of which came from three-point territory. He finished with a game-high 14 points.

Also strong for Hickory was Raheim Connelly, who netted four three-pointers and scored 12 points in the game.

The Red Tornadoes led 48-18 at the halftime break.

Kurt Busch out at Penske

December 5, 2011

CHARLOTTE — Kurt Busch and Penske Racing parted ways Monday after six bumpy seasons, a split that clouds the former champion's future in NASCAR as he embarks on a personal journey to reclaim his passion for racing.

Both the team and driver said ending the relationship was a "mutual agreement," but most believe Busch was fired in the fallout of yet another embarrassing incident. A fan caught Busch on video verbally abusing an ESPN reporter during last month's season finale, and Busch was fined $50,000 by NASCAR after the clip was posted on YouTube.
