Christmas tournament season kicked off a little early in Claremont on Thursday during the first-ever “Hoopin’ at the Hill” junior varsity basketball tournament held at Bunker Hill High School.

In girls competition, it was the Lady Bears advancing to Friday’s title game with a 35-29 victory against North Wilkes.

Maturing Newton looks to set record versus Bucs

December 23, 2011

CHARLOTTE — The last time Cam Newton faced the Buccaneers he ran his way into the NFL record books.

This time he'll use his arm to do the same.

The Panthers sensational rookie quarterback needs 18 yards passing Saturday against Tampa Bay to break Peyton Manning's rookie single-season record of 3,739 yards.

But Newton said that record is not as important as closing the season with two wins and helping the Panthers (5-9) carry a load of momentum into next season when their games once again starting counting for something.

Red Devils try to continue early success at Duals

December 22, 2011

For the 15th straight year, Newton-Conover hosts its unique Red Devil Duals wrestling tournament starting Friday.

The Duals feature six teams, including the Red Devils, Alexander Central, Hibriten, Durham School of the Arts, Enka and Piedmont.

N-C coach Eddy Clark said despite his team’s 16-0 record this season, the goal of this tournament is to improve.

“Our goal is not to go undefeated,” Clark said. “That’s never been a goal of mine. Our goal is to go 5-0 in February during the state dual team tournament. If we get beat now, it’s a good thing, but you never want to lose.”

Panthers feel defense headed in right direction

December 20, 2011

CHARLOTTE — A quick glimpse at the numbers suggests the Panthers should focus on upgrading their defense next offseason.

But that's not necessarily the team's thinking as it begins to look ahead to 2012.

Although the Panthers rank 23rd in the NFL in total defense this year — as opposed to fifth on offense — general manager Marty Hurney and coach Ron Rivera feel the defense is much improved over the last month.

The Panthers (5-9) have held three of their last four opponents to fewer than 20 points entering Sunday's game against Tampa Bay (4-10).

For the second time this season, the Newton-Conover and St. Stephens wrestling teams tangled on the mat.

The first time, the Red Devils earned a victory against host St. Stephens during the Indian Classic a few weeks ago. The result Monday wasn't any different.

Newton-Conover (16-0) won 11-of-14 individual matches, including six pins and three by technical fall on its way to a 57-14 victory in Newton.

Panthers Chudzinski's playbook has no limits

December 19, 2011

CHARLOTTE — Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski has a bag full of tricks and he's not afraid to use them — even if it means borrowing a play from a kids' movie.

With Cam Newton under center, Chudzinski is finding fun news ways to use the talented rookie's athleticism to his advantage.
