Howard's 20-20 game powers Magic past Bobcats

CHARLOTTE — Dwight Howard had 20 points and 24 rebounds, Ryan Anderson scored 23 points, and the Orlando Magic beat the Charlotte Bobcats 100-79 on Friday night for their third straight victory.

Orlando jumped to an 11-0 lead and never trailed, eventually leading 56-43 at halftime and building the lead up to as many as 21 in the second half. Charlotte never got closer than nine points in the second half.

Hickory athletic director, coach John Worley to retire

Since 1983, John Robert Worley, the current athletic director and head football coach for Hickory High, has been immersed in the development of successful athletic programs for Hickory Public Schools.

During these 28 years of dedicated service, Worley, 51, has led young athletes to more than 445 collective wins in football, softball, and basketball. The achievements have been continuous through the years with recognition for conference titles, state playoffs, sectional and regional championships, and Worley’s selection as Conference Coach of the Year.

Hickory tops Newton-Conover in Classic final

Tempers flared and aggression boiled over in a physical rubber match between Newton-Conover and Hickory for the Catawba Valley Classic girls title on Thursday.

When the dust settled, the Red Tornadoes hoisted their record 16th Classic banner, ending the Red Devils’ chance at a repeat.

The game’s final score mirrored that of a contest between the two school’s football programs.

Newton-Conover and Hickory combined to make 17-of-74 field goal attempts — a staggering 22 percent for the game.

Tigers surge by N-C in second half for win

Fred T. Foard earned its highest finish in recent memory at the Catawba Valley Classic, knocking off its second in-county rival in two days.

The Tigers scored 31 points in the second half against Newton-Conover, including 13 from Jordan Turner and eight points each from Tyler Dickens and Bryce Falgout, to overcome a slow start to the game and pick up the fifth-place boys trophy at the Classic, 48-41.

Brooke Robinson's 26 paces Foard past Maiden

Girls basketball players wearing the No. 21 battled Thursday for a chance to guide their team to a fifth-place finish on the girls side of the Catawba Valley Classic.

In the end, it was Fred T. Foard’s No. 21, Brooke Robinson, scoring a game-high 26 points to lift the Lady Tigers to a consolation final win, 52-42.

“Overall, I’m proud of the way we responded, especially after our first round loss,” said Foard coach Bradley Mangum. “I think we’ve grown up the past days, particularly with some things. We’ve just got to continue to get better, and go to South Caldwell on Tuesday.”

Tigers beat Indians behind second half run

In a match-up of teams from the same conference, Fred T. Foard and St. Stephens battled Wednesday for non-conference bragging rights and a spot in the girls fifth-place game in the Catawba Valley Classic.

Tied 28-28, Foard pulled away with a 10-0 run in the third quarter, which helped lift the Tigers to the 57-35 rivalry victory against St. Stephens.

Late free throw lifts Foard past Maiden

A free throw by Foard’s Joe Isenhour with no time remaining lifted the Tigers past Maiden, 38-37, and into the fifth-place game of the Catawba Valley Classic.

After an inbound pass by the Blue Devils hit the ceiling, Foard had a chance to take the lead with the game tied 37-37.

Isenhour launched a 15-foot shot that missed the mark as the buzzer sounded
However, the referees called a foul on Maiden, giving Isenhour two free throw attempts.

He sank the first of two, giving Foard the victory.

Panthers LB Wilson has 4 guns stolen from truck

CHARLOTTE — Police are investigating the reported theft of four guns worth $1,700 from a pickup truck owned by Carolina Panthers backup linebacker Kion Wilson.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg says in a report that Wilson reported robbers broke into his F250 truck. He says they stole a FN 57 handgun, a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun, a Glock 23, and a Smith and Wesson Body Guard 380.

Wilson said he discovered the break-in while driving after stopping at store parking lot near Northlake Mall on Monday.

Police say the door lock on the truck was also damaged.

N.C. State beats Louisville in Belk Bowl

CHARLOTTE — N.C. State sophomore cornerback David Amerson wasn't thinking about breaking records coming into the season.

He ended up shattering one few thought would ever fall.

Amerson had two interceptions Tuesday night — one that he returned 65 yards for a touchdown and another with 41 seconds left that sealed the Wolfpack's 31-24 victory over Louisville in the Belk Bowl — to give him an ACC record 13 for the season.

Former North Carolina star Dre' Bly set the previous mark of 11 in 1996.

Lady Red Devils tally 23 steals in victory

Newton-Conover's 2010 Catawba Valley Classic title defense started where it ended last season — with a victory over Fred T. Foard.

The Lady Red Devils used strong defense to defeat the Lady Tigers, 66-34, for the first time since their championship meeting at the Classic one year ago.

“I thought in the first half, we were still in our Christmas mode,” said N-C coach Ike Williams. “I think we overindulged in food and gifts. We talked about it at halftime and we stepped it up. I'm happy for a win.”
