Foard shut out by Burns on soccer field

March 5, 2012

Off to a 3-0 start to the season, the Fred T. Foard girls soccer team ran into its first speed bump Monday.

The Lady Tigers (3-1) were held offensively against Burns, while the Lady Bulldogs piled on five goals to earn the 5-0 shutout.

“We’re glad we’re getting this game over and its not quite in conference play yet,” said Lady Tigers coach Stan Elliott. “We’re going to learn from this, move forward as a team and get better from here.”

Burns (2-0) scored in the 18th minute to take the early lead on a Whitney Wellman kick from an assist by Kayla Powell.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Hickory ends N-C's home streak

The Newton-Conover's long home winning streak on the tennis court came to an end Monday with a 6-3 loss to Hickory.

The Red Devils (1-2) had won 64 consecutive matches dating back to 2007 before the Red Tornadoes non-conference court victory.

Newton-Conover starts conference play Tuesday with a match against South Iredell hoping to keep another long streak going. The Red Devils have won 61-straight conference matches heading into their match against the Vikings.

No. 4 Tar Heels ready to prove themselves in ACCs

March 5, 2012

CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina was a preseason No. 1 stocked with experience and potential NBA talent that cruised through the regular season showing only flashes of the dominant form everyone had expected.

The fourth-ranked Tar Heels have gotten everyone's attention again.

North Carolina clinched the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season championship by overwhelming Duke in its famously hostile arena. The question now is whether that weekend performance was just one game or the start of something more for the Tar Heels heading into this week's ACC tournament in Atlanta.

Second half collapse ends Trojans' season

March 3, 2012

Thirteen was an unlucky number for the Bandys girls basketball team Saturday in the 2A West Regional finals in Greensboro.

Bandys, which led Wilkes Central by 13 points at halftime, scored 13 second-half points on its way to falling to the Lady Eagles by 13, 58-45.

The Lady Trojans finish their season at 28-3.

Story's 33 lift Trojans to final

March 3, 2012

Bandys' third trip to the 2A West Regionals will be longer than the first two.

Madi Story made sure of that Friday night.

The sophomore guard powered her way to 33 points and 10 rebounds against North Surry, leading the Lady Trojans (28-2) to the sectional championship, 60-49, at Fleming Gym on the campus of UNC-Greensboro.

"That's been in her all year," Bandys coach Beth Queen said of Story's performance. "Madi just took control of the game, put us on her shoulders and carried us. She saw what had to be done and took it to the rim for us."

N-C’s Jervasse Moss selected to East-West game

March 3, 2012

Newton-Conover senior running back Jervasse Moss was tabbed Friday to play in the 64th annual North Carolina Coaches Association East-West All-Star football game.

Moss will play for the West as one of 32 high school football players on the squad.

“I think this is a good opportunity to get ready and prepared for college,” Moss said. “It’s very special because I didn’t get to play many games this season. God just blessed me with another game to play in high school football against the best players. We’ll see what happens when I get down there.”

PREP NOTEBOOK: Saint tops Maiden on diamond

March 3, 2012

Behind a one-hit performance on the mound from Ben Watson, St. Stephens defeated Maiden on the baseball diamond, 7-0 — the second win by the Indians against the Blue Devils.

St. Stephens scored six runs in the sixth inning, and were led offensively by Luke Barton, who went 3-for-4 from the plate with two doubles.

The Indians' Logan Gray was 2-for-3 with a double, while Ky'rawn Whitfield went 2-for-3, as well.

Aaron Rudisill delivered the lone Maiden hit, while Adam Houston suffered the loss on the mound for the Blue Devils.

No. 4 Duke, No. 6 UNC ready for rematch

March 3, 2012

DURHAM — Austin Rivers punctuated his first North Carolina-Duke game with one of the biggest shots in the rivalry's history.

For an encore, the freshman wants to bring his fourth-ranked Blue Devils another ACC regular-season title.

The No. 1 seed in the conference tournament — and maybe one in the NCAA tournament, too — once again is on the line Saturday night when Duke (26-4, 13-2) faces the sixth-ranked Tar Heels (26-4, 13-2) in a matchup of Atlantic Coast Conference co-leaders.

Shubert, Bolick lead Tigers to win over Trojans

March 1, 2012

Fred T. Foard won a match-up of powerhouses in 2A and 3A softball on Thursday, knocking off defending CVAC champion Bandys, 2-1.

The Lady Tigers (2-0) were guided on the mound by a two-hit, 15-strikeout performance from Lexi Shubert.

Addison Bolick led Foard offensively. She drove in two runs on a double in the top of the fourth inning, scoring Mackenzie Dziendziel and Ashley Oliver, who had reached base on a walk and double, respectively.

“When we picked up those two runs, that was really big,” said Foard coach David Shubert. “Addison had a couple of big hits.”
