At 22 years of age, Hickory Crawdads pitcher Jerad Eickhoff is having one of the best seasons on the mound in the South Atlantic League (SAL).
The Evansville, Ind. native is anchoring the Crawdads pitching staff and hoping to lead his team to its ultimate goal â€” a SAL championship.
St. Stephens High School will be hosting its Sixth Annual Co-Ed Alumni Soccer Game on Saturday, Aug. 4 at the schoolâ€™s soccer field.
The current St. Stephens boys and girls soccer teams will play in a co-ed scrimmage at 5:15 p.m. at the fields, followed by the co-ed alumni event at 7 p.m.
The soccer field opens up at 5 p.m.
CHAPEL HILL â€” North Carolina is vacating former receiver Hakeem Nicks' statistics from 2008 because he was ineligible that season.
Team spokesman Kevin Best said Friday that Nicks' records and stats from that year will remain in the media guide but be noted with an asterisk.
Returning home from a lengthy eight-game road trip, the Hickory Crawdads put on a show on the mound and behind the plate before a packed crowd of 2,573 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Thursday.
CHAPEL HILL â€” North Carolina linebacker Darius Lipford will miss this season after injuring a knee ligament for a second time.
Team officials say Lipford injured his left anterior cruciate ligament Thursday during a rehab session. He is scheduled to have reconstructive surgery in August.
He originally injured the knee during the Independence Bowl last December.
St. Stephens High School has named its next boys soccer coach.
The Indians tabbed Cory Morgan, a former Hickory and Lenoir-Rhyne standout, to be their next leader of the boys soccer program on Thursday.
Morgan replaces Chris Nelson, who stepped down in January after two seasons as the head coach of the team to take a job in South Carolina.
With a game and a win under their belt, the Catawba County Hornets are preparing this week to face the Stanly County Panthers on Saturday at Westside/Jaycee Park.
The Hornets (1-0) faced the Panthers in their Central Carolinas Football League season opener last year, winning 24-14.
West Montgomery's Ja'Quil Cap scored four times, leading the East squad past the West squad to a 34-9 victory in the 64th Annual East-West All-Star Game in Greensboro on Wednesday.
Newton-Conover players Jake Walker and Jervasse Moss both played in the contest. Moss ran four times for 21 yards and also caught a two-yard pass.
CHARLOTTE â€” The NFL has announced that Carolina Panthers backup defensive tackle Andre Neblett has been suspended without pay for the first four games of the regular season for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing substances.
For the second-straight year, the Startown Optimist Club is hosting a Babe Ruth Baseball tournament â€” this time in Newton.
The double-elimination tournament features some of the best baseball players in the Southeast region of the United States.
