Bucs' World Series ended by Heartland, 7-2

Catawba Valley Commmunity College's dream of winning an National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Div. II World Series is over.

After nearly a four-hour rain delay, the Bucs (38-17) fell to Heartland Community College on Tuesday, 7-2.

It was the second time CVCC lost to Heartland (53-7) in the tournament, including a 5-4 opening game defeat in the tournament on Saturday.

3-2 rally win against Shelby starts Post 48’s season

After leaving six runners in scoring position in the game and trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth, Post 48 rallied.

A successful bunt by Nick Guarino forced an error that plated Tyler Pait and Logan Gray to tie the game.

Crawdads blank Shorebirds, improve to .500

Scoring in six-of-nine innings, the Hickory Crawdads picked up their second-straight win over the Delmarva Shorebirds in Maryland on Tuesday.

Catcher Kevin Torres and first baseman Jhonny Gomez led Hickory (25-25) with two RBIs each.

Zach Cone and Jeremy Williams also drove in an RBI each for the ‘Dads.

The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team (38-16) is competing right now against Heartland Community College (52-7) at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Div. II World Series in Enid, Okla.

Heartland defeated Catawba Valley, 5-4, in the opening game of the tournament on Saturday.

Times set for Fred T. Foard's 3A state title games

The start times in the best-of-three series for the state 3A championship between Fred T. Foard and Charles B. Aycock have been released.

Foard (25-4) and Aycock (29-2), who play on Field 5 at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh, open their series Friday in game one at 8 p.m.

Young Post 48 team builds on playoff season

Coming off a playoff appearance at the state tournament last season, the Hickory American Legion Post 48 baseball team is in rebuilding mode.

Of the 21 players on this year’s team, four are rising sophomores, and six are rising juniors.

Bucs score 11 runs again, eliminate Falcons

For the second-straight day, the CVCC baseball team scored 11 runs, most of them late.

The Bucs won another elimination game in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Div. II World Series against the third-ranked Lackawanna (Pa.) Community College Falcons on Monday, 11-1.

Post 48 opener versus Rutherford rained out

Hickory Post 48's season opener on the road against Rutherford County Post 423 was rained out Monday.

Coach Fore Rembert said the team plans to make up the game, potentially on Friday, June 22.

Post 48 plays its first game of the season Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they host Shelby Post 82 at Henkel-Alley Field at the Hickory American Legion Fairgrounds.

Huffman's slam helps Bucs win first tourney game

The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team staved off elimination by winning its first National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Div. II World Series game on Saturday, defeating the No. 7 Community College of Rhode Island Knights, 11-5.

Trailing 5-3, the Bucs (37-16) scored eight runs in their half of the seventh inning, including a grand slam by Brett Huffman.
