The future just got a little brighter for a few Red Devils.
Four Newton-Conover athletes signed paperwork on Wednesday to play NCAA athletics and further their education.
Football players Octavius Harden and Mike Comer signed on to attend Wofford College, while football teammate Cameron Shuford and tennis player John Reid signed with Mars Hill College.
February 1st
The PA system may have been silent before the Newton-Conover and Bunker Hill girls basketball game, but the Lady Red Devils offensive and defense were loud.
Kadesha Gibbs and Samiya Pitts combined for 26 of the Lady Red Devils’ 57 points, and Newton-Conover forced 26 Bunker Hill turnovers on their way to the Catawba Valley 2A victory.
The win by the Lady Red Devils (16-2, 10-1) is the first since a tough 61-44 defeat last week against East Burke.
Newton-Conover head coach Jonathan Tharpe remembers the game all too well.
January 31st
The Catawba Valley Athletic Conference honored 18 female and 15 male swimmers in the area on Monday.
Among those honored were eight swimmers from Newton-Conover and four swimmers from Bandys.
Bandys’ Michaela Beatty was named the girl’s swimmer of the year. Beatty had an impressive year, especially in her two strongest events. She won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events at the CVAC championships on Jan. 22.
Beatty finished third in both events at the state level as a sophomore last season.
January 28th
Twenty-three makes and nine misses.
The Lady Tigers made their free throws when they counted and forced 23 St. Stephens turnovers to pick up the Northwestern 3A/4A victory.
Nine of the Lady Indian's turnovers in the game came in the third quarter, which allowed Foard to distance themselves from their opponents.
"The intensity level in the third quarter made all the difference in the world," said Lady Tigers head coach Wendy Price. "Every time we run our press well, we get turnovers. They turned it up out there. Just getting those layups off the turnovers was important."
January 27th
A home run for the Crawdads.
The 2011 Hot Stove Banquet didn’t disappoint the public and showcased a variety of local and national baseball teams.
Mark Seaman, Crawdads general manager, discussed the 2010 season on and off the field.
Last season, the Crawdads finished 75-64, which was second best in the Northern Division of the South Atlantic League.
Hickory also clinched the first-half division.
“This is probably the largest turnout we have had at the Hot Stove,” Seaman said. “We appreciate everyone coming out and kicking off the 19th season of Crawdads baseball.”
January 26th
June can't come soon enough for one Bunker Hill senior.
Jeremy Null, a 6-foot-7-inch 215-pound pitcher for the Bears, will graduate this spring. However, he will also be looking forward to the month because of the Major League Baseball Draft.
"I am just anxious," Null said. "I want to graduate, but I love high school too. High school has been a blast. It will be a bunch of mixed emotions. I am ready to see what the draft is going to be like."
January 25th
The Trojans won the battle, but the Red Devils won the war.
In a match up of top five teams in the state in 2A, Newton-Conover used an early lead to hold off Bandys for the crucial Catawba Valley Athletic Conference victory.
"It is good to wrestle somebody one times," said Newton-Conover coach Eddy Clark. "We will see them again at the conference tournament and it really would not surprise me if we see them down the road in the postseason."
January 24th
In just a few short days, a World Series star will be speaking in the area.
Texas Rangers first basemen Mitch Moreland will be the highlight of the 2011 Hot Stove Banquet presented by the Hickory Crawdads on Thursday, Jan. 27 at Rock Barn Golf and Spa.
Tickets for the event are available now and cost $35. Discount group tickets are also available and cost $200 for eight tickets.
The 25-year-old Moreland was a participant in the Texas Rangers amazing postseason, in which they reached the 2010 World Series as champions of the American League.
January 21st
The clock read 0:00. History was made.
After a win against Draughn on Friday, Bandys coach Beth Queen collected her 300th win in 15 seasons as a player and coach.
“I love the Bandys community,” Queen said. “I’ve grown up here and been a part of Bandys basketball my whole life. It brings me to be able to bring more victories to the school. I wouldn’t want to coach anywhere else.”
The Trojans came out in the first half motivated to give their coach the historic win. They displayed a strong offensive and defensive performance, and limited Draughn to just four first-quarter points.
The Lady Red Devils got off to a slow start Friday against rival Maiden, despite an earlier-season win against the Blue Devils by as many as 30 points.
By first quarter’s end, the Lady Red Devils put any doubt away and crushed rival Maiden in its win Friday.
Newton-Conover (14-1, 7-0) took a 6-4 lead early and then within the last four minutes of the first quarter outscored Maiden (7-11, 2-6) by a 11-7 margin.
Quazzy Tipps and Shynese Whitener added most of the Red Devils’ points early and combined for 14 of their 17 first-quarter points.
