Bandys softball went shopping at the gap.
It wasn't a team field trip to the mall, but rather an dominant offensive performance on the diamond for the Lady Trojans, who drove in seven extra base hits against East Burke (7-5, 5-2).
The victory puts Bandys (9-2, 5-0) in firm control of first place in the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference.
"It was a big win for us today," said Trojans coach Mike Carpenter. "We hit the ball well. We hit the right pitches in the right places. It gives us momentum going into the second half of the season."

Four years strong and growing.
The Newton-Conover wrestling club celebrated its fourth season this week with a special presentation honoring those who participated in the club.
N-C wrestling coach Eddy Clark, who organizes the youth club, came up with the idea from a meeting with a college coach.
"We met with Kevin Dresser, the head coach at Virginia Tech," Clark said. "He had been a real successful high school coach. He gave us ideas, and we got great coaches in place. This is what we came up with."

With the last name Carpenter, working with pine was a natural fit.
However, these three Carpenters don’t craft furniture or build gazebos. They build team chemistry, hammer home runs and saw down runners at the plate.Â
Carlee, Katie and Mike Carpenter share a close bond. The love of softball and family devotion. The Carpenter softball legacy started with Mike and his father.
“I always used to help my dad,” Mike said. “I used to help him coach teams when I was not much out of high school. I always enjoyed coaching kids.”

Just under 1,000 fans showed up at L.P. Frans Stadium in Hickory to witness Wake Forest and Appalachian State square off in college baseball.
The Demon Deacons scored six runs in the first four innings of the game to distance themselves and hold off a late rally by the Mountaineers to seal the victory.
Both coaches enjoyed their time in Hickory and Frans Stadium.
“We love the ballpark here,” said Wake Forest coach Tom Walter. “This is old school and old-fashion baseball. We hopefully want to do this every year and continue to grow it.”

Bandys defeated Maiden on the softball diamond Thursday in a showdown of two of the top teams in the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference.
Taylor Sigmon was 4-for-4, and Katie Carpenter had two doubles and three RBIs in the Lady Trojans' win.
"It was a very competitive game," said Trojans coach Mike Carpenter. "I was very impressed with Maiden and how they hit the ball. They were sound defensively. Their pitcher moved the ball around well. I was proud of our girls for using the opposite field. We persevered today."

Fred T. Foard won four singles matches and swept the doubles matches on its way to a Northwestern Conference victory on the court Tuesday.
The Tigers (2-4, 2-4) were led by No. 2 player Tyler Costner, who battled back in his match against Jake Wright. Costner went down early in the match and fell behind a set, 3-6.
Costner battled back though, winning a second set 6-3. He found trouble again in the third set tiebreaker, as he fell behind 5-1. After switching sides, Costner channeled his frustration and rallied back to win the third set and match, 10-7.
