BREAKING: Parochial schools to remain in NCHSAA

A vote to remove non-boarding parochial schools from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association has failed.

The NCHSAA sent a ballot to its 390 schools last month allowing principals to vote on changing a rule that allows Charlotte Catholic, Kernersville McGuinness and Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons to be members in the organization.

Watauga sweeps team honors, Hickory is second

The heat beat down on Northwestern 3A/4A track and field athletes Wednesday, and Watauga beat down the field.

The Pioneers swept the boys and girls team titles at the conference’s track and field meet at Lenoir-Rhyne University.

'Dads comeback falls short against Greensboro, 8-4

After falling behind 8-0, the Hickory Crawdads attempted to come back in their game against the Greensboro Grasshoppers.

Hickory scored four runs in the fifth, seventh and eight innings, but weren't able to make up the deficit, dropping the first road game of the series to Greensboro on Wednesday, 8-4.

BREAKING: NFL suspends 4 Saints in bounty scandal

New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma was suspended without pay for the entire 2012 season by the NFL, one of four players punished Wednesday for participating in the team's cash-for-hits bounty system.

Maiden baseball team continues to make strides

A No. 6 seed at last year's Catawba Valley 2A baseball tournament, the Maiden Blue Devils enter Thursday's first round as the No. 2 overall seed.

It's been a turnaround season for the Blue Devils, who are 15-8 overall and 10-4 in the CVAC after finishing one game below .500 in 2011.

NCHSAA approves conferences for 2013-17

After hearing eight appeals from 10 schools Tuesday, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association approved a final conference realignment draft.

Of the appeals of the NCHSAA Realignment Committee’s draft released March 15, only three were from the region, including Lake Norman Charter, Draughn and East Burke.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Tigers, Indians advance to semis

The Fred T. Foard and St. Stephens softball squads advanced to Thursday's semifinals in the Northwestern 3A/4A tournament.

Foard (19-3) topped Hickory, 14-2, behind a grand slam from Michaela Wilson. Ashley Oliver also had an RBI triple and an RBI single in the contest.

Lexi Shubert pitched 4.2 innings, allowing no hits and stuck out eight Lady Red Tornado batters.

Powered by 15 hits on offense, the Lady Trojans picked up their 13th conference victory and wrapped up the CVAC title with a 11-3 victory over Bunker Hill.

Bre Jones led the Bandys hitting attack with three of the Lady Trojans' 15 base knocks.

Montana Lineberger and Kadi O'Shell led the Bears offensively with two hits each.
