Red Devils sweep opening tri-match on mat

Newton-Conover was perfect during its first tri-match of the season on Monday at North Gaston High School.

Sessions helps lift Bobcats over Bucks 102-98

Ramon Sessions wanted another chance to prove he had some ice left in his veins. He got that chance Monday night and took advantage of it.

Sessions scored nine of his 23 points in the fourth quarter, including a pair of free throws with 4.2 seconds left to seal the game, and the Charlotte Bobcats beat the Milwaukee Bucks 102-98.

Panthers give up late lead to Bucs, fall in OT

It was the best of times for the Carolina Panthers through three quarters of Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

It became the worst of times and possibly the entire season in the fourth quarter.

The Panthers (2-8) gave up an 11-point lead with six minutes to go in Sunday’s contest, eventually falling to the Bucs in overtime, 27-21.

Grizzlies top Bobcats for eighth-straight win

Fresh off a 10-point victory against the New York Knicks, the Memphis Grizzlies continued their early-season roll versus the Charlotte Bobcats on Saturday at Time Warner Cable Arena.

The Grizzlies (8-1) built a 17-point lead in the second half and held off a late rally by the Bobcats to win their eight-straight game, 94-87.

Bears advance with 21-6 victory against Wildcats

An electric crowd was fired up at Moretz Stadium on Saturday for something Lenoir-Rhyne hadn’t done since 1962 — make a run at an NCAA Div. II National Championship.

The Bears (9-2) kept their ground game going, as they have done all season, tallying 243 rushing yards en route to a 21-6 opening round playoff win over Fort Valley State University (Ga.).

Trojans fall in third round for second-straight year

Bandys lost in the third round of the 2AA football playoffs for the second-straight year, falling to South Iredell in Troutman on Friday, 45-14.

“We just got beat up on by a better football team,” said Bandys head coach Randy Lowman. “We knew they were a good team. We played them tough a couple of times, but I think tonight showed what kind of a football team they’ve got.”

Lady Bucs eliminated from NJCAA Nationals

The Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team had its season ended on Friday in Toledo, Ohio, but not before making some history first.

The 14th-seeded Lady Bucs won their first-ever National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Div. II Tournament game with a straight-sets victory (27-25, 31-29, 25-11) against No. 6 Moraine Valley Community College.

Red Devils, Tigers tune up for wrestling seasons

In a match up featuring the defending 2A and 3A Western Region champions, the Newton-Conover and Fred T. Foard wrestling teams got an early glimpse of one another on Thursday.

The Red Devils hosted the scrimmage at the school’s main gym against the Tigers.

Senior student-athletes sign with schools

Nine Catawba County high school student-athletes made their college decisions official on Wednesday, including five at Fred T. Foard, two at Maiden and one each at St. Stephens and Hickory.
