Bobcats schedule heavy with early home games

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte Bobcats will open the 2012-13 campaign with eight of their first 12 games at home, including the season opener Nov. 2 against the Indiana Pacers.

The Bobcats, coming off the worst season in NBA history, will make two national television appearances on NBA TV and play 18 weekend home dates. The 82-game schedule is split evenly between home and road dates.

Hornets try to oust rival Warriors this Saturday

The rivalry between the Catawba County Hornets and Iredell County Warriors adds a page to its storied book Saturday when the two teams meet at Westside/Jaycee Park in Central Carolinas Football League action.

The Hornets (1-0), who are coming off a 28-12 win against the Stanly County Panthers last Saturday, try to change the Warriors' domination in the series between the two teams.

WR Smith pledges $100,000 to Colo. shooting victims

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith signed a 3-year, $18 million extension in April.

Now, he is putting that money to great use.

Smith pledged that he will make a $100,000 donation to the survivors of the shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo.

Smith released a statement Thursday regarding the generous donation.

A day after right fielder Jordan Akins homered twice, Hickory’s Alejandro Selen matched his teammate’s impressive feat.

The 5-foot-10 second baseman connected on a pair of leadoff home runs, helping guide Hickory to a 6-3 day game matinee victory over the visiting Delmarva Shorebirds on Wednesday.

Charlotte 49ers select white helmet for new team

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte 49ers have unveiled a crisp white helmet speckled with green as the official headgear of their new football program.

Charlotte coach Brad Lambert says the program put a lot of effort into highlighting the school's brand and adds that the 49ers logo "really pops off this helmet." The logo is on both sides of the helmet.

Tagliani to run Nationwide race in Montreal

CHARLOTTE — IndyCar Series driver Alex Tagliani has added a NASCAR race to his schedule — the Nationwide Series race at Montreal.

Tagliani will drive the No. 30 Chevrolet for Turner Motorsports. The Canadian driver is a fan favorite at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, and finished second in last year's race.

Pair of HRs from Akins not enough to lift 'Dads

Despite a pair of home runs by Hickory Crawdads right fielder Jordan Akins, the Delmarva Shorebirds erased a two-run deficit on Tuesday to come away with a 7-3 victory at L.P. Frans Stadium.

The home runs by Akins were his seventh and eighth bombs of the season, respectively.

Maiden's Lilly verbally commits to Seahawks

Maiden rising senior golfer Thomas Lilly has made his college choice.

The reigning Catawba Valley 2A golfer of the year is heading to UNC-Wilmington next fall to play golf for the Seahawks.

Lilly announced his intent to play for UNC-Wilmington earlier this week.
